Overview

We are looking for a Recoveries Claims Handler to join our Singapore office and contribute to our commercial customer claims journey. As part of our team, you'll learn how to play a role in maintaining client relationships, with opportunities to attend meetings and further develop your skills in this area.

Job Purpose

The Marine Cargo Recovery/Subrogation Claims Handler is responsible for managing the recovery of marine cargo losses, including assessing and investigating subrogation opportunities against third parties. The role involves working closely with our claims team to recover costs on behalf of clients and/or insurers from third parties responsible for the loss or damage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Processing new recovery claim notifications;
  • Reviewing claims and assessing the potential legal liability of parties involved;
  • Providing guidance to clients including but not limited to advice on general recovery prospects, legal time bars, liability limits and any requirements/recommendations for security, vessel arrest or litigation;
  • Collating documents and correspondence for submission to carriers, shipping lines, P&I Clubs, freight forwarders and other third parties worldwide;
  • Monitoring legal time bars and case progress;
  • Liaising with lawyers and other agents in the pursuit of recoveries where required;
  • Collecting further information and documents to proceed/assist with recovery where required;
  • Negotiating settlement of claims in accordance with contractual terms, national and international law and/or on a commercial basis where appropriate;
  • Ensuring the client receives excellent service in accordance with industry and company guidelines;
  • Marketing of the department and company;
  • Ensuring in-house and client systems are kept fully up-to-date;
  • Building and maintaining good working relationships with shipping lines, P&I clubs, freight forwarders, insurers, solicitors, as well as other legal/claims professionals;
  • Managing a team of case handlers (at managerial level);
  • Taking responsibility for productivity and profit;
  • Adhering to legal requirements, industry regulations and customer quality standards set by the company;
  • Handling any service complaints promptly and diligently.

Qualifications and Skills

Experience

  • Experience in handling marine cargo subrogation/recovery claims, ideally within an insurance, legal, or shipping/forwarding environment.
  • Knowledge of subrogation practices and contracts of carriage.
  • Experience in dealing with third-party claims and legal actions is preferred.

Education

  • Degree in Maritime Studies, Insurance, Law, or a related field is a plus.
  • Professional certifications in insurance, marine law, or claims handling are beneficial.

Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to negotiate and influence key stakeholders.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Able to integrate within a team and able to work on your own initiative.
  • Friendly and helpful approach.
  • Proficiency in claims management software and Microsoft Office Suite.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time position based in our Tampines office.
  • Possibility of working from home up to 2 days per week once onboarded.
  • Occasional travel may be required, possibly to settlement meetings or for Head Office training.

Salary is based on a tiered structure that takes into account an individual’s experience.
