Job description

We have an opportunity for an Assistant Underwriter, Property to join our property team here in Tokio Marine Kiln, Singapore.

Role Purpose & Accountability

Assist the Underwriters to carry out all tasks relating to the underwriting and reinsurance of the division to provide appropriate customer focused products and maximize profitability to the division, always bearing in mind the relationship between risk and return in respect of all underwriting activities.

This role includes responsibility for:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide pre/post-underwriting and rating support to Underwriters, this includes but not limited to:
    • Manage the receipt and tracking of all submissions.
    • Loading client/account specific details into TMK’s pricing tools
    • Co-ordinating CAT Modelling
    • Any applicable sanctions screening.
    • Accumulation checks (as applicable)
  • Developing an internal network for facilitating the transfer of information and data between functions and department to service the requirements of the underwriters and clients.
  • Assist the underwriters in maintaining and developing their book of business and key stakeholder relationships.

Monitoring & Business Planning:

  • To understand, absorb and adhere to the Department’s strategy, objectives, and current Business Plans.
  • To have a clear understanding of the company's risk appetites in terms of business plans, conduct and of the company's overall risk appetite.
  • Champion the company values and work in accordance with the organizational behaviours
  • To be aware of and comply with the conduct rules as set out by the PRA & FCA Standards of Conduct
  • To be aware of and comply with the relevant rules, regulations and requirements laid down by any relevant regulatory, statutory and / or supervisory bodies or authorities in which the company is registered, trades and/or operates.
  • To underwrite/ assist in the underwriting in accordance with the Departmental Heads' instructions in respect of premiums, terms and conditions which are set to secure the planned underwriting profits in accordance with the Department’s agreed Business Plan.
  • To ensure that the Department’s underwriting guidelines in terms of both line size and aggregate exposures are always adhered to and, where necessary, to highlight if reinsurance should be acquired to reduce risks in respect of individual and aggregate exposures to a level which is acceptable to the Department.
  • To ensure that conflicts of interest are identified and managed.

Relationships:

  • To ensure that all customers are always treated fairly.
  • To establish and develop business relationships with the Department’s intermediaries, agents and business partners in order to secure business portfolios for the Department that meet with the Business Plans, and which are effectively handled to reduce the risk of mal-administration in the distribution process.
  • To assist the Underwriters with developing new forms of insurance services, products and distribution channels which both respond to intermediary and consumer demand and have the potential to deliver profits to the Department which are commensurate to the risks.
  • To assist and provide coaching and training to graduates and new Underwriters working with the Department to ensure that they obtain a full understanding of the rating methodology/tools, risk assessment and underwriting management processes used by the Department.

Consistency:

  • To understand, absorb and adhere to all relevant sections of the TMK Underwriting Policies & Procedures Manual.

Reporting:

  • To provide relevant information for independent review and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • To ensure that management information is reported in a timely and accurate manner.

General Administrative / Other:

  • Specific activities in respect of the underwriting, management, and reinsurance of the Department’s business portfolio, as determined by the Departmental Head and Divisional Head.

Technical Requirements:

The following technical requirements are essential for this role:

  • Working towards ACII or willingness to start.
  • Must be fully aware of compliance and regulatory issues.
  • Up to date on industry developments within insurance and the appropriate area of expertise.
  • Meticulous, organized, self-starting, energetic and able to respond well to the high-pressure environment.
  • Must be a team player, providing support to other members of staff and taking ownership of customer issues when required to.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

The following technical requirements are desired for this role:

  • Experience working within Insurance/London Market is preferred.
