Assistant Manager, Lab Operations & Safety

This role is responsible for overseeing laboratory safety and equipment operations. The primary duty is to support daily safety activities within the school, ensuring adherence to safety regulations and standards to minimize workplace hazards and incidents. Additionally, the role includes managing lab equipment, maintaining various research laboratories and graduate rooms, participating in the MSE HSE Committee and the First Aid & Spill Response Team, and supporting undergraduate experiments.

Roles And Responsibilities

Oversee Safety Operations
  • Assist in developing and implementing OHSMS, SOPs, and safety guidelines.
  • Review and approve lab access and update safety training results.
  • Address safety queries, conduct safety inspections, and provide safety training.
  • Organise safety drills and promote safety culture.
  • Conduct incident investigations and implement corrective actions.
Handle MSE Health Safety & Environment (HSE) Activities
  • Plan, organize and document safety meetings.
  • Support BizSafe STAR Certification renewal and conduct monthly inspections.
  • Actively involve in incident investigations and safety management.
Involve in First Aid & Spill Response Team
  • Stay updated with first-aid and chemical spill response and firefighting training.
  • Participate in emergency drills and respond to incidents promptly.
Manage and handle the laboratory equipment
  • Provide training and consultation to staff and students on equipment use and maintenance.
  • Schedule routine maintenance, coordinate repairs, and generate equipment reports.
  • Source and procure equipment consumables.
Level in Charge of Graduate Rooms and Laboratories
  • Inspect and maintain emergency equipment and graduate rooms.
  • Ensure cleanliness and address maintenance concerns.
Support for Undergraduate Student Teaching
  • Provide equipment training and support for undergraduate experiments.
  • Inspect and set up equipment and guide students during experiments.

Requirements

  • A recognised degree in an engineering discipline, preferably complemented by relevant safety certificates.
  • Proficient in ISO 45001 standards, bizSAFE, safety audits, fire safety, and laboratory management.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience managing laboratory safety and equipment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Efficient problem solver.
  • Capacity to think strategically.
  • Competent in service delivery and relationship management.
  • Good initiative, decisiveness, service-oriented mindset, good teamwork, and attitude to work.
  • Meticulous and attention to detail, follow-up, and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (Written and Spoken).
  • Working knowledge and expertise with a variety of software, hardware, and applications would be of added advantage.
