We need a savvy business partner who can provide both practical and strategic advice on the legal, regulatory, and business environments applicable to a large, multi-national agricultural sciences company in Asia Pacific. The successful candidate will be a true leader with demonstrated ability to drive projects and initiatives, partner with senior business and functional leaders, and communicate clearly with a variety of stakeholders across Asia-Pacific and in the United States on significant, and often sensitive, matters.

The Role (Daily Responsibilities)

The successful candidate will “hit-the-ground-running” and be responsible for:

  • Providing counsel to senior leaders on matters of business development, licensing, distribution, mergers and acquisitions, and other external growth projects in APAC.
  • Managing attorneys and legal staff based in China, Pakistan, Malaysia, and India; optimizing team performance, professional development, and connection with business teams locally.
  • Supervising the retention and management of outside counsel across the region, ensuring the delivery of cost-effective and high-quality services to the Company, developing annual external legal budgets, and monitoring spending against such budgets.
  • Managing disputes in the region via negotiation, settlement, or litigation and providing guidance to the global team on litigation risks and reserves.
  • Leading the negotiation, documentation, and implementation of regionally strategic transactional or commercial agreements while continuing to implement and improve standard T&Cs to achieve business goals.
  • Ensuring that the organization and Asia-Pacific legal entities comply with applicable legal requirements pertaining to corporate governance issues, including officer and director appointment and contract execution/DOAs, as well as corporate contract policies and systems.
  • Providing direct support to regional leaders on varied areas of employment law, including hiring & firing and employee benefits; providing strategic oversight of employment litigations and arbitrations in the region.
  • Developing and implementing a holistic compliance program in the region, working with key stakeholders, that includes increased transparency on high-risk topics, streamlined reporting on compliance matters, and training on key local regulations and FMC policies (especially the Code of Ethics, FCPA, and contract principles) throughout the organization in alignment with the Global Ethics Office.
  • Investigating and making recommendations on potential noncompliance issues in support of the Global Ethics Office.
  • Partnering with colleagues in the global law department on issues such as intellectual property, governance, and ethics and compliance.

The Candidate (Requirements)

  • JD, LLM, or LLB degree from a top-tier law school with at least 10-15 years of premier law firm and MNC combined experience.
  • Bar admission sufficient to practice law in-house in Singapore.
  • Knowledge of the industry or experience working in a similarly regulated industry (i.e., pharmaceuticals, chemicals, manufacturing, oil & gas).
  • Deep understanding of the legal, compliance, and business issues facing MNCs in the region.
  • A proven track record as a trusted advisor to senior leadership teams at a major company, preferably an MNC.
  • Strong commercial and negotiation experience, capable and comfortable functioning as a Corporate Generalist while working with specialist attorneys in the region and company.
  • Proven leadership capabilities in providing vision & direction to effectively drive team performance towards best-in-class.
  • Experience managing and developing attorneys and legal staff.

  • Strong multi-tasking capabilities and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively address and influence all levels of the organization, including the ability to effectively communicate how an issue impacts the Company from both a business and legal perspective.
  • Fluency in English (both written and spoken) required, with Bahasa, Chinese, or other APAC language skills a plus.
