Job Description

Duke-NUS is seeking an individual with considerable experience and passion in simulation-based education to work in the Office of Education, collaborating with Duke-NUS faculty and clinician-educators across the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre (AMC). This is a full-time position supported by institutional funds to promote innovation in simulation-based education.

The successful applicant will lead the delivery of the school’s simulation-based learning (SBL) strategy across the MD programme, including planning and coordinating training in drills and procedural skills, crisis resource management, patient safety, human factors, and non-technical skills. He/She will also be expected to initiate her/his own line of scholarship within the scope of the Office of Education and wider AMC simulation-based learning activities. Broad institutional areas of interest will include but are not limited to faculty development, hybrid simulation and moulage, immersive team training, serious gaming approaches, crisis resource management, Simulated Patients, feedback, and debriefing.

The incumbent will be eligible for faculty appointment at the Assistant/Associate Professor level at Duke-NUS, depending on academic interest and teaching focus; rank would be commensurate with experience, achievement, recognition, and teaching.

Job Responsibilities

• Contribute to the mission, strategic priorities, and objectives of the School including (and not limited to) promoting excellent patient care, enhanced safety, and improved outcome metrics.
• Lead the Clinical Performance Centre (CPC) with overall responsibility for the implementation and support of Simulation-based Learning (SBL) initiatives across the School.
• Support the SBL and assessment component of the School’s educational activities, including working with the MD programme, Graduate Studies and SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medicine Education Institute as required.
• Work collaboratively with clinical faculty, content experts, and course/programme leaders to develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate SBL interventions.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff to achieve consistent, integrated application of simulation-based education, events, research, and other activities.
• Establish and maintain strong working relationships and partnerships with clinical educators, course, module clerkship directors, and other relevant school faculty.
• Work collaboratively and effectively with SIMS (SingHealth Duke-NUS Institute of Medical Simulation).
• Promote and undertake academic scholarship, research, and programme evaluation.
• Create innovative programmes of SBL that support curriculum innovation, generating new ideas, evaluating new techniques and equipment.
• Identify opportunities for educational innovation, technology, and improvements in SBL, enabling effective integration into education programmes.
• Develop, lead, and document simulation-based faculty development activities, including courses, individual instruction, printed and online resources.
• Develop and maintain relationships with simulation specialists to engage in collaborative problem solving and innovation.
• Engage in personal and professional development by seeking opportunities to learn about current developments and best practices in simulation-based education.
• Appropriate duties as assigned by reporting officer.

Qualifications

• PhD degree in education, simulation, healthcare, or other relevant disciplines.
• Minimum 8 to 10 years of significant simulation-based experience in healthcare, including recent and successful leadership positions.
• Significant experience in the following:
o inter-professional education
o simulation and debriefing techniques
o immersive high fidelity simulation
o computerized mannequins
o procedural and part-task trainers
o simulated patients
• Demonstrable commitment to research and scholarship, such as research productivity, preferably in a higher education institute, healthcare organisation, or medical education setting; grant funded research as Principal Investigator or lead; peer-reviewed research publications; visiting appointments; advisory roles; consultancy; other evidence of scholarly activities; knowledge creation, synthesis, application, and dissemination.
• Exceptional time management, organisational skills, and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet project deadlines.
• Possess strong writing and critical thinking skills.
• Able to effectively interact, communicate, and collaborate within a multidisciplinary educational and clinical setting.
• Have strong EQ and interpersonal skills with experience in managing a team.
• Demonstrated ability to publish in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
• Accessible, calm, flexible, and mature individual with superlative interpersonal skills that permit him/her to work independently as well as in a team environment, to establish credibility with staff at all levels and of different disciplines and backgrounds, and to be persuasive in both one-to-one and group settings.
• Able to mentor clinical faculty in simulation-based education.
• Able to retrieve and translate simulation-based education theory and research to the delivery of simulation-based education.
• Able to self-motivate and work independently.
• Committed to maintaining confidentiality and exercising discretion in sharing of information.
