Sterilization Specialist

Duties And Responsibilities

1. Processes of sterilizing reusable medical instruments and handling biohazard materials each day in a restricted work environment that must be carefully controlled and monitored.
2. Identifies which items can be re-sterilized and reuses per manufacturer instruction and tracking method strictly followed. Checks and ensures the sterilizer was used correctly.
3. Maintains a safe clean environment inside the CSSD facility.
4. Uses standard safety precautions while working with biohazardous materials, toxic materials, steam, and gas without harm to self and others.
5. Works in accordance with all safe policies and procedures of the facility.
6. Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information and responding to requests.
7. Seeks information to ensure competence and safety in performing any work undertaken and is aware of the risks and hazards associated with their work.
8. Attends all mandatory training as scheduled by the facility.
9. Reports all incidents and injuries.
10. Provides and facilitates appropriate training and ongoing support to all staff. Consults and coordinates with health care team members to verify any queries.
11. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
12. Contributes to research and development programs within the hospital and maintains an awareness of evidence-based practice.
13. Attends symposiums or any in-service educational programs for updating the advanced sterilization techniques and infection control lectures.
14. Coordinates and complies with quality improvement infection control programs, advising and consulting with specified personnel about necessary precautions.
15. Performs other quality improvement responsibilities as delegated from time to time by the Nursing Unit Manager.
16. Performs all procedures in the CSSD set-up according to the scope of service practice, including Decontamination Area, Cleaning, and Disinfection Inspection.
17. Removes breeding grounds for surviving microorganisms and maintains accurate, detailed monitoring records to protect against corrosion.
18. Ensures proper disinfection or decontamination by chemical or dry or wet heat.
19. Ensures validation of sterilization process by quality control (e.g., physical monitoring, chemical indicator monitoring, biological indicator monitoring) in pressurized high-temperature steam method or plasma sterilization to meet stringent technical standards for performance and safety.
20. Ensures the sterility of the products until they are used by maintaining the integrity of the package.
21. Follows steps in the sterile supply cycle which are crucial to the good and safe use of sterile instruments or other sterile supplies.
22. Ensures safe movement of equipment and materials during packaging.

Job Requirements/Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in Science. SCFHS License in CSSD specialist.
2. BLS Preferred Clinical practice with 2 years' experience as a decontamination specialist in a clinically complex tertiary center.
3. Working knowledge of Performance Improvement Process and International Standards.
4. Able to work on rotating shifts, including mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and may be on call.
5. Fluency in spoken and written English is essential; Arabic is desirable.
6. Valid SCFHS Licenses as CSSD specialist. BLS.
