Job Purpose

The job holder is responsible for leading the development and implementation of comprehensive monitoring programs that evaluate and protect environmental quality while ensuring compliance with regulations.

The senior manager will also oversee the installation of various environmental monitoring equipment, collection and analysis of environmental data, and manage a team of environmental professionals. Scientific analysis including laboratory interpretation of samples is crucial in interpreting this data accurately, enabling informed decision-making and effective environmental management.

The senior manager will coordinate stakeholder engagement to address environmental concerns, identify potential environmental risks, develop and implement mitigation strategies, and ensure that all monitoring efforts align with best practices and organizational sustainability goals.

Additionally, the senior manager will play a key role in communicating findings to both internal and external stakeholders, fostering collaboration to promote a culture of environmental stewardship throughout the organization.

Job Responsibilities

Strategic Contribution

  1. Assist with the implementation of the annual business plan and targets and execute the strategic agenda of the Environmental Data Management function to deliver RSG vision and mission.
  2. Ensure that the strategy is translated into operational business plans for the Environmental Data Management function and monitor the performance and execution of those plans to achieve functional objectives and deliver the division's strategy.

Leadership

  1. Coordinate the activities of the Environmental Data Management team to ensure that all work is carried out efficiently, in line with the strategic project management plans, policies and procedures.
  2. Manage a team by setting priorities and objectives, managing performance, and providing ongoing feedback and coaching to meet the functional challenges and goals.
  3. Serve as a role model to ensure employees awareness and commitment to RSG vision, mission, values, fundamentals, and corporate strategy to establish a highly engaged and motivated human resources, and continuously improve performance.

Budget

  1. Contribute to the preparation of the functional budget of the Environmental Data Management & Environment division and monitor financial performance versus the budget so that the business is aware of anticipated costs/revenues, areas of unsatisfactory performance are identified, and potential performance improvement opportunities are capitalized upon.

Key Responsibilities:

Monitoring:

  1. Lead the design and implementation of a comprehensive environmental monitoring program that includes the monitoring of drone data, underwater imaging, and the analysis of physical and chemical parameters across marine, terrestrial, ecological, and atmospheric environments.
  2. Ensure all monitoring equipment is calibrated and maintained through proactive maintenance protocols and regular inspections.
  3. Establish a comprehensive maintenance schedule for all instruments, adhering to manufacturer specifications and regulatory standards.
  4. Develop procedures for routine checks and documentation of equipment performance to identify and resolve issues promptly.
  5. Foster effective communication and collaboration among internal teams to share best practices and ensure alignment in monitoring efforts across the organization.
  6. Oversee the configuration, operation, and continuous improvement of key enabling technology systems, including environmental data management systems, ensuring they meet organizational requirements for accurate monitoring.
  7. Develop and maintain subsystems that facilitate accurate data input and integration into the overall environmental monitoring system.
  8. Work closely with data and systems teams to develop and refine machine learning models that enhance data analysis and reporting capabilities.

Reporting:

  1. Oversee the production and dissemination of high-quality, timely reports on environmental monitoring results, ensuring accuracy and clarity in all communications for internal stakeholders.
  2. Develop, monitor, and report on environmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that align with the organization's strategic vision and support ongoing performance assessment.
  3. Lead regular assessments of environmental conditions, utilizing collected data to analyze trends and inform organizational strategies.
  4. Identify and analyze drivers, pressures, and impacts related to environmental conditions, ensuring a thorough understanding of sustainability trends.
  5. Lead the development and implementation of a diverse portfolio of data products and services that meet the organization's monitoring and reporting needs.

Training and Development:

  1. Train, mentor, and develop team members within the environmental monitoring and data management teams, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  2. Design and deliver training programs focused on enhancing team members understanding of monitoring systems, data input, and reporting processes.
  3. Contribute to the identification of opportunities for continuous improvement of the department's systems, processes and practices considering international best practice, improvement of business processes, cost reduction and productivity improvement.

Job Requirements

Qualification and Experience

  1. Degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, other related fields, or equivalent experience.
  2. Minimum of 12 years experience in environmental monitoring, environmental data and analysis, environmental assessment, environmental conservation, enhancement, strong background with marine ecosystems will be preferred.
  3. Experience in large-scale environmental monitoring programs, using leading edge technologies.

Skills

  1. In-depth understanding of environmental regulations, compliance requirements, and best practices in monitoring.
  2. Openness to new technologies and methodologies in environmental monitoring, including machine learning applications.
  3. Ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions and organizational needs.
  4. Understanding of 3D analysis including unstructured data (images and videos) through processes such as photogrammetry, Ortho mosaics and digital elevation models.
  5. Expertise in gathering, analyzing, and reporting environmental data.
  6. Ability to develop ambitious but feasible short, medium, and long-term team objectives, and to communicate effectively to team members and staff.
  7. Demonstrated time management and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  8. Ability to mentor and guide team members to improve their skills and knowledge.
  9. Excellent command of written and spoken English. Arabic language skills would be an asset.
