Pediatric Ward – Charge Nurse

Summary

Within the mission, vision and values of King Fahad Military Medical Complex, in close collaboration with medical and other healthcare team members demonstrates advanced nursing knowledge and applies this knowledge to the assessment, diagnosis, delivery and design of nursing care and interventions in the Medical Unit.

Education / Qualifications Required:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
• OR Associate Degree/Diploma or country equivalent + Bachelor’s in Nursing related field

Experience:

• Experience from North America, Western Europe, Australia, or New Zealand is required.
• Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience post-qualification.
• Minimum of one (1) year in Pediatric Ward or a related specialty.

License:

Current and in good Standing Nursing License/Registration (RN) to practice in country of residence

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Manage and oversee daily operations in the pediatric ward, ensuring efficient patient flow, staff assignments, and quality care delivery.
• Coordinate and supervise nursing staff, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to maintain high standards of pediatric nursing care.
• Monitor patient care plans, ensuring they are age-appropriate, evidence-based, and tailored to the needs of pediatric patients and their families.
• Act as a resource for complex patient care situations, offering clinical expertise in pediatric nursing and handling emergencies promptly.
• Facilitate effective communication among the multidisciplinary team, patients, and families to ensure continuity and quality of care.
• Assign and adjust nurse-to-patient ratios based on patient acuity, staffing levels, and ward activity.
• Conduct regular patient rounds to evaluate the quality of care, patient satisfaction, and staff adherence to policies and procedures.
• Ensure proper implementation of infection control practices and safety protocols within the pediatric ward.
• Participate in the orientation, training, and professional development of nursing staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
• Lead shift handovers and ensure clear, concise communication of patient information between shifts.
• Monitor and maintain documentation accuracy, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
• Support families in understanding their child’s care plan, addressing concerns, and providing emotional support and education as needed.
• Actively participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and research projects aimed at enhancing pediatric patient care and outcomes.
• Handle conflicts or issues among staff or with families professionally and diplomatically, escalating concerns to the Nurse Manager when necessary.
• Assist in ensuring the availability and proper functioning of medical equipment and supplies required for pediatric care.
• Advocate for the rights and needs of pediatric patients and their families, ensuring a patient- and family-centered approach.
• Collaborate with the Nurse Manager to develop and implement policies, protocols, and initiatives specific to pediatric nursing care.
• Provide leadership and direction during emergency situations, ensuring a swift and effective response.
• Promote a positive, respectful, and culturally sensitive work environment for staff, patients, and families.
• Ensure the pediatric ward meets all accreditation, safety, and quality standards set by the hospital and regulatory agencies.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned to support the overall function and success of the pediatric ward.
