Job Description

The Fire Life & Safety Officer is a critical role responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and operational integrity of our facilities. This position plays a vital part in maintaining regulatory compliance and safeguarding our assets.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage all engineering and maintenance operations with a strong focus on safety protocols and asset protection.
  • Implement and maintain rigorous preventative maintenance programs to ensure optimal facility performance.
  • Develop and execute strategic plans for capital expenditure projects, adhering to budgetary constraints and organizational objectives.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Lead and coordinate the emergency response team, maintaining readiness for all potential facility issues.
  • Implement and monitor energy conservation initiatives to promote sustainability and cost-efficiency.
  • Conduct regular assessments of building systems, grounds, and physical plant to identify and address potential safety hazards or maintenance needs.
  • Collaborate with senior management to develop and implement long-term facility management strategies.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of all maintenance activities, safety inspections, and regulatory compliance efforts.
  • Provide expert guidance on fire life and safety matters to all levels of the organization.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following stringent educational and experience requirements:

Option 1:

  • High school diploma (mandatory)
  • Minimum of 2 years of verifiable experience in engineering and maintenance or a directly related professional field
  • Completion of rigorous technical training in HVAC-R, electrical systems, plumbing, and Fire Life Safety (FLS) Certification

Option 2:

  • Associate's degree (2-year program) from an accredited institution of higher education in one of the following fields: Building and Construction, Engineering, Mechanics, or a closely related discipline
  • No prior experience required, but candidates must demonstrate a strong academic background and practical skills relevant to the position

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assists with managing the physical plant including equipment, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, and electrical systems.
  • Assists with ensuring regulatory compliance to facility regulations and safety standards.
  • Assists with managing and controlling heat, light, and power and recommends current best methods for energy conservation and economical facility operations.
  • Assists with the development of specifications and requirements for service contracts and administers such contracts to support building needs.
  • Distributes preventive maintenance and repair work orders and monitors timeliness and quality of completion.
  • Assists with the oversight of the maintenance of grounds, guestrooms, public space, restaurants, property vehicles, and recreational facilities.
  • Assists with the development of a long-term plan for preventative maintenance and asset protection and overseeing execution of the plan.
  • Assists with the development of project plans in accordance with renovation or new construction needs.
  • Coordinates with contractors for bids and construction to ensure timely completion of projects within budgetary guidelines.
  • Builds positive relationships with external customers such as city building/zoning department, fire prevention bureau, and vendors.
  • Ensures fire crew has complete understanding of all procedures, equipment, and alarms.
  • Performs monthly property inspection to ensure buildings and grounds are maintained in excellent condition.
  • Conducts guest room and common area inspection to ensure guest satisfaction.
  • Inspects and evaluates the physical condition of facilities in order to determine the type of work required.
  • Recommends or arranges for additional services such as painting, repair work, renovations, and the replacement of furnishings and equipment.
  • Selects and orders or purchases new equipment, supplies, and furnishings.
  • Manages parts and equipment inventory.
  • Ensures building and equipment licenses and certifications are current.
  • Maintains property life safety systems (fire fighting equipment, sprinkler systems, and alarm systems).
