Job Purpose:
The Climbing Guide is a position working throughout The Red Sea territory, whose primary goal is to support the Akun Adventure Operations team to operate the adventure assets within the destination, whilst growing a diverse inland climbing program of routes and crags for all visiting guests to The Red Sea.
He/She is responsible for supporting the adventure program operational roll-out. The role requires collaboration with key stakeholders, ensuring all sides of the local community and business are informed and working together.
Job Responsibilities:
- Supporting the development and growth of unique climbing Crags and routes throughout The Red Sea.
- Implement the operations and safe delivery of all inland climbing activities.
- Assist the Climbing Specialist to ensure compliance for all guests and activities with the destination-specific standard operating procedures, supporting with the development of SOPs/RAMS and ongoing evaluation.
- Managing relevant Outdoor Instructional Staff to ensure all inland destinations and equipment are kept clean and properly maintained, this includes the venue and all related assets.
- Engage in active promotion and advocacy of all adventure activities delivered within the wider context of the project, including those not under their direct area of responsibility i.e., GALAXEA & WAMA.
- Participating in regular review sessions with Climbing Specialist and Senior Adventure Operations Manager to provide updates on all aspects of the adventure operations.
- Be able to understand and enforce the application of a range of international adventure rules and regulations as and when required, connecting with local and international sports eco-systems and bodies.
- Preparing and checking climbing equipment before departing on pre-booked sessions.
- Welcoming guests and giving an overview of the planned climb.
- Orienting guests to the basics of climbing and all relevant safety information.
- Assisting guests set up their climbing gear and making sure they're secured properly.
- Coaching guests during experiences, providing tips and suggestions throughout.
- Teaching technique classes and evaluating guests' progress with climbing and belaying.
- Answering questions and offering advice when appropriate.
- Following all necessary safety protocols and responding properly if there's an emergency.
- Monitoring weather forecasts before and during outdoor climbs.
- Ensuring that guests have an enjoyable climbing experience.
- Assisting fellow instructors and staff as necessary.
- Properly documenting, maintaining, and stowing all climbing equipment after sessions.
- Leading a team of outdoor instructional staff and delivering climbing technique and skill sessions.
- Conduct evaluation of climbers to assess skill levels and provide appropriate guidance.
Job Requirements:
Qualifications & Experience:
- Wilderness First Aid Certification or First Aid Certificate issued by an internationally recognised training provider.
- Mountain Survival Training.
- Leave No Trace training.
- 1-2 years of experience as a climbing instructor.
- Experience working with both children and adults.
- SNHCF or AGMA certification in the appropriate type of climbing (e.g., rock, climbing wall, single pitch, etc.) as minimum requirements.
- Work experience within the tourism industry; experience in Saudi Arabia or GCC is advantageous.
Skills:
- Proven experience and record of accomplishment for delivering a range of climbing activities in a high-end hotel/resort environment.
- Clear capacity to recognise potential hazards within the day-to-day operations of climbing activities, taking the initiative, and setting in place actions to minimize those risks.
- Passion and enthusiasm for rock climbing.
- Extensive personal climbing experience in both indoor and outdoor settings.
- Familiarity with climbing equipment and techniques.
- Professional appearance and personable demeanor.
- Exhibit leadership qualities, mentor and develop other team members both in professional as well as inter-personal capacities.
- The candidate must be fluent in both written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate in a second language such as Arabic a distinct bonus.
- The ideal candidate will be a positive and proactive individual with an outgoing, charismatic, and approachable character and with a high aptitude for customer care and good leadership skills.
