Dental Assistant

The incumbent provides complete chair side assistance to the general or specialist dentist during clinical/surgical dental procedures. Performs clinical supportive functions and is responsible for assisting a dentist engaged in diagnostic, operative, surgical, periodontal, preventive, orthodontic, prosthodontic, endodontic, or pedodontic procedures during examination and treatment of patients.

The incumbent is considered an expanded-function dental assistant and will perform various dental procedures on patients under the supervision of the dentist. These procedures include:

1. Placement and removal of the rubber dam
2. Placement of temporary dressings
3. Taking alginate impressions for study models
4. Removal of surgical sutures
5. Removal of excess cement following crown and/or bridge cementation

The clinical functions performed include preparing and dismissing patients, point of use cleaning of instrumentation and disinfecting equipment, providing post-operative instructions prescribed by the dentist, maintaining supply orders, maintaining applicable records, and other tasks as requested by the dentist. Work is performed in any of the dental facilities as assigned, receiving technical supervision and guidance from the dentist, and work direction from the Dentist and Clinic Manager.
