The salary range for this position is CAD $45.46/Hr. - CAD $65.35/Hr.
Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Compensation & Classification, the Compensation and Classification Advisor offers comprehensive work design, job evaluation, and classification services for unionized and excluded positions. This role provides specialized leadership on compensation and classification issues to Human Resources staff, Providence Health Care's (PHC) management, and senior leaders. Additionally, the Advisor offers expert advice on job design, compensation, and classification matters. They will also be responsible for:
- Interpreting multiple collective agreements and industry jurisprudence, assessing the impact of job design and classification changes, and monitoring changes within the health sector to evaluate their potential impact on PHC.
- Developing and preparing job descriptions to support PHC's recruitment, development, and performance needs, and advising on the redesign of workflows within the organization, including identifying the potential impacts of changes to classifications, job content, and organizational structure.
- Providing leadership in resolving union objections, grievances, and job review requests, negotiating settlements with union representatives and stewards, consulting with HEABC and various health authorities, and participating in internal and external groups and committees on behalf of PHC.
What You Bring
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, plus five (5) years of recent related experience in work design and job evaluation within a unionized environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Your Day to Day:
Leadership and Advisory:
- Provides specialized leadership advice on job design, job classification issues, and compensation issues, and provides advice on short- and long-term impact of job structure/job classification changes.
- Provides advice on provisions, plans, and policies related to job classification and compensation and benefits, including the interpretation and application of multiple collective agreements, as well as salary administration policies related to PHC's Terms and Conditions of Employment for Non-Contract staff.
- Provides compensation/classification leadership by investigating, analyzing, responding to, and resolving union objections, grievances, and job review requests. Negotiates with Union representatives and stewards to resolve issues, researches, consults with HEABC, and prepares for and presents, as required, classification grievances and third-party interventions.
- Provides work direction to the Labour Relations Coordinator/Job Analyst, provides guidance and leadership on issues related to classification and compensation, makes recommendations, and conducts performance appraisals in collaboration with the Leader, HR Advisory Services.
- Participates in internal and external groups and committees and represents PHC to review work design, organization structure, job classification, and total compensation issues to share and provide information related to Compensation and Classification.
Analysis and Evaluation:
- Analyzes and reviews work, conducts job audits, and makes recommendations on appropriate jurisdiction, qualifications related to duties, reporting structure, financial and operational implications, and the appropriate job classification and pay structure. Advises in the redesign of workflow for areas within the organization, including identifying the potential impacts of changes.
- Assesses the impact of changes in job roles and/or classifications, including changes resulting from industry-wide jurisprudence. Plans, develops, and implements changes, and provides leadership to ensure understanding of financial and operational implications.
- Conducts total compensation surveys, prepares reports, completes costing reports, and maintains databases and other records.
Job Descriptions and Classification:
- Develops, prepares, and updates job descriptions that are accurate and consistent, outlining job responsibilities and qualifications consistent with PHC standards and multi-classification system requirements, and to help support the job evaluation, recruitment, development, structural design, and performance needs of PHC.
- Ensures understanding, and clear interpretation and application of collective agreements, as well as jurisprudence related to classification and/or compensation systems, to facilitate informed decisions.
- Develops various tools, services, processes, and systems related to Classification/Compensation to ensure information, tools, and processes are readily accessible and consistently utilized. Conducts training sessions for staff, develops training materials, and facilitates sessions.
