Transpower is the owner and operator of the National Grid. At the heart of the electricity sector, we transport electricity via high voltage transmission lines from where it is generated to large electricity users and the distribution businesses that deliver it to homes and businesses nationwide.

Our large Information Services and Technology (IST) division delivers and supports the infrastructure and applications that work with the grid, facilitate system and grid operations, and support our corporate processes and systems.

About The Team

Our Application Services team in our award-winning ICT division helps ensure that electricity is delivered to all New Zealanders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by maintaining and evolving complex critical IT systems.

The business domain we work within ensures there are always new and interesting challenges to address and that the work we do matters - electricity is critical to our economy, our health system, and the wellbeing of our citizens!

We've been changing at a rapid pace, using new technologies to engineer modern web/mobile applications, intelligent AI/ML embedded automation to streamline workflows and functions, adopting open-source software and DevOps methodologies to accelerate product delivery.

About The Opportunity

You'll join a knowledgeable team who ensure that technology-based enhancements or functionality are delivered to internal clients with minimal cost and time delays. We'll support you to:

  1. Work collaboratively in product teams with Business Analysts, Architects, other software engineers, and Operations staff to define and deliver detailed application design and development to meet requirements.
  2. Understand and contribute to software application architecture.
  3. Work closely with and provide third level support to the Application Support teams.
  4. Liaise with Test Manager/Analyst in reviewing of test plan to ensure appropriate coverage and performance.

We'll also get you involved in introducing new capabilities for users by understanding their needs and exposing users to the available capabilities of technology through new developments.

What will you bring?

A flexible and adaptive approach and desire to think broadly to understand how what you do impacts both people and our wider systems. You'll love to learn and are passionate about software delivery and quality.

Your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate:

  1. A bachelor's degree in computer science or other related field, or the equivalent work experience.
  2. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present technical concepts in an easy-to-understand way.
  3. Some experience/understanding of working with applications DevOps toolchains for continuous build, integration, packaging, and deployment, and/or understanding of working in both Agile and Waterfall software development environments.

A year or more relevant analysis and programming experience in the technology as listed below is an advantage:

  1. Strong coding skills in a mainstream programming language such as Java, C#, JavaScript, or Python.
  2. Source control systems - preferably Git.
