About the Role:

The Team: Upstream Solutions from S&P Global Commodity Insights comprise some of the most extensive and complete information, analytics, insight, and advisory services in the world. We deliver oil and gas databases and software, energy transition insight, energy supply and demand forecasts, and comprehensive data on transactions at the global and regional market levels. The S&P Global Upstream Solutions Basins offering provides critical geological information and insight which supports a variety of products within S&P Global's Commodity Insights Upstream Solutions organization. The core basins team comprises experienced geoscientists and has a global footprint with key locations in Geneva, Houston, Kuala Lumpur and Tetbury (UK). The role is focused on the Far East Region and will also require managing a wider team that focuses their research on The Far East, Middle East, I.S.C, Africa, Australasia and the C.I.S.

Responsibilities and Impact:

  • Lead and oversee technical research, analysis and interpretation of information and data relating to the sedimentary basins of the Far East region.
  • Manage and mentor a team of basin researchers based in the Kuala Lumpur office, and support the team in their regional research.
  • Maintenance of the IRIS21 database (Geological Provinces, Petroleum Systems, Plays & Stratigraphy) and geological spatial layers to support our global coverage.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate basin research findings into broader strategic initiatives.
  • Present research findings to stakeholders and contribute to policy formation and decision-making processes.
  • Identify opportunities for new research projects and drive innovation within the team.

What We’re Looking For:

Basic Required Qualifications:

  • A highly motivated, personable and collaborative individual who is a dynamic, articulate, well-rounded, critical thinker and has a commercial mindset.
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geophysics, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in basin research or a similar role, ideally within the energy sector.
  • >10 years upstream industry experience with experience in managing a small team.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex geological data.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in English.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Geology, Geophysics, or a related field is preferred.
  • Familiarity with basin research techniques specific to the Far East region.
  • Proficiency in using geological software and tools for data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead research projects and contribute to strategic planning.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as SQL or Python.
