We are currently seeking an experienced senior engineer to play a vital role within our Process Safety Team. This includes conducting design assessments of complex process safety systems and equipment, providing practical advice to colleagues and clients, and mentoring less experienced team members.
The role
- To carry out design appraisal of marine, offshore and onshore oil and gas and renewables industries process safety arrangements and systems (including hydrocarbon process plants and utility systems, marine essential services, hydraulic systems, and other related or similar processes) against Codes, Standards, Rules, Regulations and Client project requirements, within agreed parameters that includes budget constraints and contractual requirements.
- To provide sound Technical and Regulatory guidance to Clients during the design and construction phase and participate in meetings or workshops where required.
- To perform assessments and provide specialist advice for service delivery, research or development work within agreed parameters that includes budget constraints and contractual requirements.
- To apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate and maintain engineering products, processes, systems and services.
- To produce the deliverable within the agreed broad parameters in an appropriate format and take responsibility to review other employee’s work as requested.
- To discuss / present the deliverable with the internal / external client at a senior level and be able to suggest alternative solutions where appropriate.
- Undertake administration as required in line with current processes and procedures.
- To assess / recommend the time / value of the work to be undertaken for an internal / external client within an agreed fee / cost structure and within the commercial aspects of the contract.
- To make recommendations based on internal / external client feedback to assist in service delivery improvement and to help build the business.
- To contribute to internal / external client management as appropriate.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
- Conduct occasional site visits at various ship yards, client sites, testing laboratories, or production facilities as required to successfully complete projects.
- To pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
- To mentor / coach other technical employees to achieve effective technical knowledge transfer and application.
- To undertake project management where applicable including monitoring project progress and spend against budget and contract requirements.
What you bring
- Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Process Safety Engineering, or another relevant field of engineering.
- Minimum 7 years of working experience in a related Process Safety Engineering of which a large part large should be in Oil & Gas Upstream and Floating Offshore Sector.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution with Professional Engineer (PE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) or similar designation, or eligible and working towards such PE / CEng status.
- Possess flexible attitude, effective interpersonal skills, strong analytical skills, and can provide technical, commercial, and people communication.
- Proficiency in English language, exceptional communication skills, alertness and attention to detail, including technical report writing, having the ability to adapt and work to tight deadlines.
- Knowledge of Classification / Certification / Verification and familiarity with Classification Societies (IACS) Rules is desirable.
- Exposure to Consultancy, Concept / FEED / Detailed Design and EPC projects.
- Working knowledge of Process Safety Engineering for the marine, offshore and onshore oil and gas and renewables sectors and able to participate in multi-disciplinary Engineering Design Reviews and provide all necessary process safety engineering input and support to close out of actions.
- In depth knowledge and experience of process and process safety engineering studies and deliverables such as: process and utility simulations (such as HYSYS, Pro II, Flarenet) and case studies, process philosophies, safeguarding philosophies, equipment sizing, hydraulic calculations, PFDs, UFDs, P&IDs, process data sheets, ESD Cause & Effect diagrams, PHA, HAZID, HAZOP, CHAZOP, SIL, LOPA, pressure relief, depressurisation and flare studies, PSV sizing, Control Valve sizing, Hazardous Area Classification schedules and drawings.
- In depth knowledge of process and process safety engineering reference Codes & Standards and Rules & Regulations such as API (14C, 500, 505, 520, 521, 526, 2000), ASME, NFPA, NORSOK, NACE, HSE, etc.
- Experience in HVAC Design would be an advantage.
- Understanding of Mechanical Design (Piping, Rotating Equipment and Pressure Vessels) to suitable level as it is required to lead and co-ordinate activities with other technical disciplines:
- Understanding of Piping System, pressure vessel design and Rotating Equipment to common codes and standards, such as PD5500 and ASME Sec VIII (Div. 1 & 2), B31.3, B31.4, B31.8, API Std 610, API Std 617.
- Familiar with PED
- Understanding of materials for use in pressure vessels, piping, valves and piping special items.
- Understanding of wellhead equipment design to standards such as API Spec 6A, API Spec 17D, ISO 10423 & ISO 13628-4 is an advantage.
- Understanding of special considerations for sour gas systems, in particular: NACE MR 0175 (material selection)
- Knowledge of additional considerations such as Passive Fire Protection Performance, Blast Analysis, Gas Dispersion Analysis, etc. would be an advantage.
- Exposure in the New Energy / Low Carbon / Energy Transition space such as CCUS, Green Hydrogen, Blue Hydrogen, Offshore Wind, Power to X, Emissions Reduction) would be an advantage.
- Basic project management techniques are desirable.
