Products & Services BU Counsel

Description -

This position acts as a legal advisor to various business units within the HP Solutions, Personal Systems, and Print business units supporting multiple types of product lifecycle and services & solutions transactions. Successful candidates have excellent abilities to spot actual risk and recommend solutions that are pragmatic and meet client’s needs and timeframes. You will be the first point of contact within HP Legal for your assigned client groups and role.

The position requires one to represent HP in transactions, interactions, or disputes with customers, suppliers, partners, and competitors while balancing the business interests of client groups with ultimate fiduciary responsibility to HP. In addition, you would support template, policy, and process functional teams with a goal of increasing speed of business and incorporating best practices of public companies. A general background in contract law, contract drafting, negotiation, and procurement practice is highly desirable. The position may require representing HP to outside professional organizations and regulators and will require strong cross-company coordination with your colleagues within Legal. The ability to train and empower clients will be a focus.

This position applies advanced subject matter knowledge to solve complex business issues and is regarded as a subject matter expert. Frequently contributes to the development of new ideas and methods. Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of multiple factors. Leads and/or provides expertise to functional project teams and may participate in cross-functional initiatives. Acts as an expert providing direction and guidance to process improvements and establishing policies. Frequently represents the organization to external customers/clients. Exercises significant independent judgment within broadly defined policies and practices to determine the best method for accomplishing work and achieving objectives. May provide mentoring and guidance and training to employees at all levels in our client and legal organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Develops legal strategies and identifies potential legal risks in the areas of product lifecycle and software & solutions development.
  • Provides legal subject matter expertise in one or more areas among contracting, sales, sourcing, handling of confidential information, inbound and outbound IP licensing, and product/solution development.
  • Applies knowledge of business models regarding leasing and financing components of managed solutions to drafting, negotiating, and guidance for both clients and colleagues who support HP country subsidiaries.
  • Develops new ideas and methods to effectively address recurring legal issues or matters facing multiple internal client organizations. This includes client training and reinforcement and coaching on negotiation strategies for legal issues.
  • Supports the provision of institutional knowledge, support, and fiduciary oversight in relation to corporate and local governance standards, policies, process, and reporting requirements.
  • Monitors evolving regulatory landscapes and industry trends to ensure the organization's adherence to changing legal requirements.
  • Represents the organization before industry policy setting organizations, government agencies and other regulatory bodies.
  • Contributes to complex multidimensional projects or transactions by identifying and resolving complex legal issues requiring in-depth knowledge and judgment, working with other HP disciplines and other members of the HP Legal team.
  • Applies advanced subject matter knowledge, and exercises independent judgment in resolving business issues and establishing policies.
  • Mentors team members, providing guidance, sharing knowledge, and fostering professional growth and works well and with agility and fluidity in meeting customer demands for empowering and direct legal advice.

Education and Experience Required

  • Four-year or Graduate Degree in Law, or any other related discipline or commensurate work experience or demonstrated competence.
  • Typically has 7-10 years of work experience, preferably in commercial, general or specialty law, or a related field.

Preferred Certifications

  • State Bar Membership and/or the ability to practice law for a corporate client within the jurisdiction of residence.
