The Mechanic Head is responsible for leading and managing all workshop operations, ensuring the efficiency and productivity of mechanics, wiremen, welders, special drivers, and other technical staff. This role oversees daily workshop activities, ensures timely repairs and maintenance, enforces safety and quality standards, and provides leadership to the Chief Foreman, Assistant Chief Foreman, and workshop team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Management & Supervision
- Lead and oversee the workshop team, including mechanics, wiremen, welders, special drivers and other skilled workers.
- Supervise the Chief Foreman and Assistant Chief Foreman, ensuring smooth workflow and operational efficiency.
- Assign tasks, monitor work progress, and ensure deadlines are met.
- Operations & Maintenance
- Ensure all repairs and maintenance work are carried out efficiently and meet quality standards.
- Oversee preventive maintenance schedules for vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in collaboration with the team.
- Ensure proper usage and maintenance of workshop tools and equipment.
- Work Planning & Reporting
- Coordinate daily work schedules and allocate resources effectively.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, servicing, and parts inventory.
- Generate reports on workshop performance, work completion, and workforce productivity.
- Safety & Compliance
- Enforce safety regulations and ensure compliance with company policies and industry standards.
- Conduct regular inspections to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Promote a culture of workplace safety and ensure adherence to 5S principles.
- Training & Development
- Identify skill gaps and provide on-the-job training for mechanics, wiremen, and welders.
- Work with HR to implement training programs for continuous skill improvement.
- Guide and mentor junior staff to enhance technical and operational competencies.
- Process Improvement & Other Duties
- Continuously evaluate and improve departmental process flow to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
- Identify opportunities to optimize workshop operations and reduce downtime.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by management.
Requirements:
- Experience: Minimum 5-8 years in a workshop or heavy vehicle maintenance environment, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
- Technical Skills: Strong understanding of vehicle repairs, maintenance, welding, and electrical work.
- Leadership Abilities: Proven experience in managing skilled workers and workshop operations.
- Communication Skills: Ability to coordinate with different departments and provide clear instructions.
- Problem-Solving: Capable of troubleshooting mechanical and operational issues effectively.
- Safety Knowledge: Familiarity with workplace safety regulations and best practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Diploma or certification in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Technology, or a related field.
- Experience managing a fleet maintenance workshop is an advantage.
