JOB OVERVIEW

The Manager, External Affairs is responsible for developing and implementing strategic initiatives to enhance the organisation’s reputation, visibility, and relationships with external stakeholders. This role focuses on building partnerships, managing communications, and fostering engagement with government bodies, partner organisations, media, and other relevant audiences. The position plays a critical role in influencing public perception and ensuring alignment of messaging across all channels.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, strong communicator, and an effective collaborator with experience in stakeholder management, public relations, and advocacy efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Stakeholder Engagement & Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government bodies, Internal Agencies, regulatory agencies, community organisations, and private corporate partners.
  • Develop effective engagement strategies to foster positive relationships and drive key initiatives.
  • Identify and map key stakeholders, assessing their influence and interest in the organisation’s activities to tailor engagement approaches accordingly.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the organisation and external stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and understanding of the organisation's objectives.
  • Support the Executive Director and the Resource Mobilisation & Fundraising Division in raising a total of RM2.5 million in unrestricted income for MAF annually.
  • Demonstrate personal commitment to securing RM100,000 in 6 months for the unrestricted fundraising project.

Crisis Management

  • Develop, implement, and maintain crisis management plans to ensure swift and effective responses to potential risks and incidents.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to manage crisis situations, ensuring that all communications are timely, accurate, and consistent.
  • Lead the crisis management team during incidents, providing clear direction and managing communications to protect the organisation’s reputation.
  • Conduct post-crisis evaluations to improve future response strategies.

Advocacy & Public Affairs

  • Monitor political, regulatory, and policy developments affecting the organisation’s areas of interest.
  • Represent the organisation at relevant forums, industry events, and stakeholder meetings to advocate for its positions and goals.
  • Develop and coordinate advocacy campaigns, ensuring alignment with the organisation’s objectives.
  • Prepare policy briefings, consultation responses, and advocacy materials to support the organisation’s public affairs agenda.

Media Relations & Communications

  • Serve as the point of contact for media inquiries and cultivate relationships with journalists and media outlets.
  • Oversee the development of press releases, statements, and other media content to enhance the organisation’s visibility.
  • Provide guidance in managing crisis communications and maintain an effective response plan.
  • Develop and implement proactive media engagement strategies to ensure consistent and positive coverage of the organisation’s activities.
  • Prepare key messages, speeches, and talking points for senior leadership in preparation for media appearances and public engagements.

Strategic Planning & Reporting

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive external affairs strategy, aligning with the organisation’s vision and mission.
  • Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) and the impact of external affairs activities.
  • Conduct regular analysis of external trends and stakeholder sentiment to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations for senior management, summarising the outcomes of external engagements and providing insights for future initiatives.

Collaboration & Internal Communication

  • Collaborate closely with other departments to ensure a cohesive approach to public affairs and external engagements.
  • Provide internal updates on relevant external affairs activities, ensuring all teams are informed and aligned.
  • Work with the communications team to ensure that external messaging is consistent with the organisation's overall branding and communication strategy.

Carry out any other duties as may be directed by the Executive Director of (MAF& MAC) to further the aims of MAF.
