Job description

Position Purpose

The Maintenance Unit Manager at SIMA is responsible for overseeing all maintenance activities, ensuring efficient use of resources, and driving continuous improvement through breakdown analysis. This hands-on role involves various tasks such as physical maintenance, work assessment, supervision, breakdown analysis, administration, and project management. The Manager also leads a team of maintenance professionals to achieve company goals and successfully execute major overhauls.

Key Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Manage budget of allocated unit
    • Compile and manage the maintenance resource budget.
    • Compile Opex maintenance budget (spares and contract labour) and manage expenditure for the unit within approved budget.
    • Compile annual Capex budget for retrofits and for replacement of equipment.
  • Recommended maintenance mix and schedule improvements
    • Under/over or inappropriate maintenance activities identified.
    • Recommendations made to Reliability/System/Planner Engineer to improve maintenance mix.
    • Maintenance schedules reviewed periodically.
  • Managed performance
    • All Unit maintenance KPI’s reviewed and corrective action taken where necessary.
    • Peak Performance Plan discussions conducted with all direct reports in Jan each year (outputs, quality requirements, objectives & development plans agreed).
    • Formal PPP reviews conducted in July and December.
    • On-going, informal performance monitoring, feedback and coaching provided daily or as required.
  • Develop staff
    • Coaching on SAP PM user skills & standard planning practices provided on the job where necessary.
    • Conduct SAP training for new end users.
    • Detailed development plans in place & executed for direct reports.
    • Formal development initiatives conducted in partnership with HR.
  • Project management
    • Planning, organizing, securing, and managing resources to achieve specific goals with defined beginning and end (usually time-constrained and often constrained by funding or deliverables) with respect to Shutdowns and major overhauls.
    • Objectives to bring about beneficial change or added value. The temporary nature of projects stands in contrast with business as usual (or operations), which are repetitive permanent, or semi-permanent functional activities to produce products or services objectives.
  • Provided 4th line breakdown support
    • Failures/problems/deviations investigated, and root causes identified, verified and corrective action taken according to procedures.
    • Spares and tools obtained using the appropriate systems as per work instruction.
    • Breakdowns repaired with the minimum production downtime.
    • 4th line support/specialist called in immediately it is identified that repair cannot be affected without further support.
    • Report on breakdowns & repairs carried out completed as per work instruction.
    • Plant/equipment/process commissioned after job and handed over to customer for approval.
    • Information/feedback collated, documented and provided to relevant customers.
  • Manage and support with problem solving and focused improvement projects
    • Conduct studies to address product/process issues which impact product quality, manufacturing reliability, and equipment design specifications.
    • Initiate equipment/process audits to identify problem areas and plan for corrective measures.
  • Controlled maintenance activities
    • Periodic checks conducted on all maintenance activities.
    • Standard engineering practices, SOP’s developed, documented & implemented.
    • Root cause analyses carried out on breakdowns.
    • Corrective action taken where work is not conducted according to plan.
    • Coaching provided to technicians where necessary.
    • Ensure job cards checked for completion, signed off & captured on SAP.
    • All maintenance activities in the unit supported (including assisting & allocating resources for breakdown activities to ensure quality workmanship on all maintenance work).
    • Weekly and monthly maintenance KPI reports generated, analyzed and corrective action taken.
  • Perform housekeeping in work area
    • Responsible for up-to-date documentation and organized filing system in packaging according to the 5S/GMP principle.
    • Implement 5S in own Workstation.
  • Operation Excellence
    • To manage and roll out performance, productivity & continuous improvement excellence in Manufacturing & Supply Chain.
    • Lead capability development, productivity, operational excellence & other initiatives in Manufacturing.
    • Conduct performance & KPI audit across Manufacturing on a regular basis.

Position Requirements:

  1. Diploma in Electrical/Electronic/Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 7 years’ experience in a FMCG manufacturing plant.
  2. Or Degree in Electrical/Electronic/Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a FMCG manufacturing plant.

Language: English

Skills required

  1. Supervision skills (5 years).
  2. Sound knowledge of all rotating equipment and automation used in this industry.
  3. A sound understanding of productivity improvement and preventative maintenance systems and principles.
  4. In-depth knowledge of budgeting and controlling budgets.
