Job description

Job Purpose

  • Lead the conduct of investment and transaction risk assessment for the Group.
  • Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the risk team assigned to assist Investment and Asset Management (IAM).
  • Develop strategies and drive the implementation of investment and fund management risk management framework, methodology, system, and programs for the Group, including obtaining buy-in from relevant stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities

A) Internally - Operations

  • Review, recommend, and enhance (where appropriate) Investment, Fund and Retail Risk Management’s (IAM) roadmap, policy, framework, methodology, and system.
  • Direct the operations of the IAM risk management framework as designed.
  • Ensure an effective governance structure is maintained to manage risk at IAM Business Units.
  • Coordinate IAM and Group's Risk Management efforts effectively by the Risk team.
  • Provide ongoing education and appropriate briefing and training to management; review and enhance risk training programs required for Risk Champions and operational teams.
  • Develop, review, and enhance the Group-wide risk appetite and measurements tailored to the Group’s IAM industry.
  • Assist Management and Operational teams to embed and integrate risk management into business processes and transactions within the approved risk appetite.

B) Externally – Best Practice and Scan of Risk Environment

  • Stay informed of current risk management best practices in the industry.
  • Investigate and research emerging risks and trends in the industry, advising CRICO, GMD, or management where appropriate.
  • Provide necessary feedback/briefing on industry changes to CRICO/GMD/GMC/Board.
  • Drive continuous improvement of IAM and Risk Management Framework, where applicable.

Risk Assessment Activities

Risk Identification:

  • Design and enhance processes for identifying areas within IAM and relevant areas of the Group requiring Risk input to ensure timely identification of risks.
  • Continuously identify and analyze potential risks to the Group's assets, earning capacity, or success.
  • Provide quality challenges to the evaluated risks – inherent and residual risk, impact and likelihood, and targeted risk; ensure practical results reflective of the risks faced.
  • Lead risk workshops and risk identification programs.
  • Act as the key point person for the risk department for IAM and a subject matter expert for investment, fund, and related risks for the rest of the Group.
  • Work with management/operations to ensure that mitigation activities for newly identified risks are embedded into operational systems/processes.

Risk Updates:

  • Review and ensure risk registers are updated and signed off by respective process/risk champions quarterly (or more frequently if risk profiles change significantly).
  • Conduct high-level reviews of threats annually in line with the latest approved Strategy Blueprint.
  • Review the Risk Assessment for Major Proposal/Investment/Divestment initiatives as prepared by IAM, Strategy, or Operational Units.
  • Provide independent views/advice/feedback on key risk matters for consideration by CRICO, Senior Management, and the Board.
  • Timely escalate risk matters or disputes on risk issues to CRICO and GMD, where appropriate.
  • Develop and/or enhance Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) and collate KRI data for IAM and the Group, reporting to Senior Management.
  • Participate and contribute to Project, Operational, Strategy, SQM, CAPEX, etc. meetings as required.

Risk Monitoring

  • Drive and manage the risk monitoring process for IAM and the Strategy team.
  • Review validations conducted by the risk team on key risks impacting the Group, including mitigating strategies and ratings.
  • Lead any other risk reviews or validations as required.
  • Prepare and/or review the independent GRM validation report for CRICO approval.

Risk Reporting

  • Review and/or finalize Group Risk reports or risk analyses on major proposal/investment/divestment initiatives for submission to Group Management Committee, Group Investment Committee, RMC, and/or Board for CRICO approval.
  • Ensure risk reporting timelines are set and complied with by operational and functional teams.

Business Continuity Management (BCM)

  • Coordinate the development and enhancement of the Business Continuity Planning (BCP) for IAM.
  • Liaise with Senior Management of IAM regarding the ongoing effectiveness of BCP.

Risk Administration/Operations (Department Role)

  • Lead and manage dedicated Risk resources to deliver mandates and agreed KPIs.
  • Develop the annual risk plan with the risk team; finalize risk annual plans after discussions with CRICO.
  • Provide regular and timely updates to CRICO on the status of risk management activities undertaken by the IAM Risk team.
  • Assist in the development of GRM annual budget and actual expenditures; notify CRICO of any deviations from approved budgets.
  • Manage the IAM risk function, ensuring each team member is assigned relevant tasks with set timelines and expected delivery.
  • Ensure team members execute their work objectively and independently, maintaining high-quality standards in reporting of all review issues and recommendations.
  • Provide feedback via performance evaluations, identifying developmental needs and succession planning.
  • Identify and ensure team members are adequately trained and certified.
  • Provide necessary support to Group Compliance Office team to ensure timely execution of the Risk and Compliance Annual Plan and Programs.

Other Functions

  • Assist in the establishment and maintenance of GRM communication tools and facilities using appropriate ERM methodologies, tools, and techniques.
  • Provide advisory services to Departments/Operating Units to establish and improve their risk management capabilities.
  • Support CRICO or Management in developing tools and systems that support the risk environment; manage and drive implementation of tools and systems.
  • Assist CRICO in establishing clear working relationships with operational teams to avoid overlap or duplication of functions in managing risks and controls.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education/Professional Qualification

  • At least 5 years of experience in Investment and Fund Management.
  • At least 3 years in a current position (VPII or VP1).
  • Real estate and risk-related experience is advantageous.
  • At least 8 years of overall work experience.
  • Driven, analytical, with good attention to detail and ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
  • Possess at least a Professional Degree/Certificate, Bachelor's degree, or Post Graduate Degree.
  • Education related to Investment, Fund Management, and Risk Governance is advantageous.
