Job Description

A large plantation company is looking for a General Manager, Sustainability, ESG & Carbon Management to develop and implement the social, environmental, and economic sustainability policies within the organisation's practices. This position reports to the Managing Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Produce the Sustainability Statement by compiling data on material issues gathered from information owners of responsible Business Units, planning and overseeing the writing as well as reviewing of the Sustainability Statement, and ensuring the Statement fulfils Bursa Malaysia's requirements.
  2. Lead the development, execution, and management of strategic sustainability initiatives, including the Sustainability Strategy (5-year Roadmap) and related processes (including sustainability reporting, communication, and promotions), ensuring a standard and consistent adaptation Group-wide, with the support/buy-in of the Board of Directors and Management Committee.
  3. Lead and guide the sustainability team in carrying out audits and preparation of external audits for RSPO/ISPO/MSPO Certification.
  4. Oversee the integration of ESG principles into the company's operations, policies, and procedures.
  5. Develop and execute the company's ESG strategy aligned with corporate goals and regulatory requirements.
  6. Ensure compliance with local and international ESG regulations and standards.
  7. Identify and manage ESG-related risks and opportunities.
  8. Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including investors, regulatory bodies, and community groups, to promote ESG initiatives.
  9. Communicate ESG performance and goals to stakeholders through regular reports and meetings.
  10. Lead the preparation and publication of ESG reports, including sustainability reports, carbon disclosure, and other related documents.

Key Requirements:

  1. Degree in Environmental Studies/Sustainable Development/Environmental Science/Biodiversity/Conservation or related field of study.
  2. Minimum ten years of experience working in the sustainability department of large organisations.
  3. Prior experience in the plantation and palm oil industry is highly preferable.
  4. Knowledge in RSPO, MSPO and ISPO standards and the auditing processes would be highly advantageous.
  5. Familiarity with BURSA requirements, GRI standards, FTSE4GOOD and UN Sustainability goals are crucial.
  6. Experience with ISO14001 environment management standard would be an added advantage.
  7. Good understanding of High Conservation Value (HCV), High Carbon Stock (HCS), Social Impact Assessment (SIA), Land Use Change Analysis (LUCA), and Remediation and Compensation Procedure (RaCP).
  8. GHG Emissions Calculation: Calculation based on internationally recognised calculation tools 2006 IPCC Guidelines and local emission factors.
  9. Knowledge of ISCC ISO 14064 principles and requirements at the organization level for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals is preferred. This includes requirements for the design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organization's GHG inventory.
  10. Strong understanding of principles of ESG integration, ESG risk management, sustainable insurance solutions, sustainability reporting, and data collection.
  11. In-depth knowledge of ESG principles, frameworks, and reporting standards such as Bursa Malaysia's Sustainability Reporting Guide, GRI, SASB, TCFD.
