Job description

Job Purpose

To supervise the day-to-day operation, maintenance, deployment, and upkeep of all fleet vehicles and rail bound machinery (RBM) used in railway construction projects. The Foreman will ensure that all equipment is in optimal working condition, properly utilized, and compliant with safety and regulatory requirements.

Educational Qualifications

• Certificate or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Technology, or related field.

• Vocational or technical training in heavy machinery or plant maintenance is an advantage.

Experience

• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in fleet or plant operations, preferably within the railway construction or heavy infrastructure industry.

• Hands-on experience with rail bound machinery, on-track equipment, or heavy construction vehicles is preferred.

• Previous supervisory or foreman experience is an added advantage.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervise the daily deployment and operations of fleet vehicles and rail bound machinery on project sites.

• Monitor utilization reports, running hours, and downtime of RBM and mobile equipment.

• Coordinate regular servicing, preventive maintenance, and urgent repairs in collaboration with the workshop team.

• Ensure proper records of machinery movement, fuel usage, inspection reports, and operator logs are maintained.

• Carry out field checks and inspections to verify that machinery is used safely and as per operational protocols.

• Liaise with project and operations teams to ensure machinery allocation aligns with site requirements.

• Assist the Fleet & RBM Operations Manager in implementing equipment tracking systems and control procedures.

• Report any mechanical failures, misuse, or safety incidents involving RBM or fleet vehicles.

• Maintain and monitor inventory levels of spare parts and consumables.

• Enforce site safety regulations and ensure all operators adhere to operational and safety SOPs.

• Support in mobilization and demobilization of machinery during project start-up or closure.

• Coordinate vendor or contractor support for outsourced repair or maintenance work.

• Train and guide operators and drivers in proper use and care of the machinery.

• Perform any ad-hoc duties assigned by the Fleet & RBM Operations Manager or management from time to time.

Requirements & Skills

• Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of fleet and rail bound machinery operations.

• Good supervisory and team coordination skills.

• Basic computer skills (Excel, email) for equipment tracking and reporting.

• Ability to interpret machinery service manuals, checklists, and operational logs.

• Good communication and problem-solving skills.

• Physically fit and willing to work at project sites as required.

• Familiarity with safety regulations and compliance requirements in a construction or railway environment.

• Willingness to work long or irregular hours, including weekends or nights, depending on project needs.
