Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Failure Analysis (FA) engineer supports the Failure Analysis Engineering function by the product process review, enhancing and developing the analysis method to monitor field quality data for accuracy and consistency. Performs engineering work in basic and applied research, development, and design of new products and/or sustaining existing products. Provides support to factory and design, giving useful feedback to help solve failures. Acts as a bridge between supplier, design, and factory.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Designs, modifies, and evaluates electronic apparatus components or circuitry for use in electronic equipment and devices.
  2. Creates, modifies, sustains, and maintains software for testing. Verifies and improves test coverage.
  3. Designs and modifies the test fixture to meet and improve product quality and decrease operation costs by detecting (CA/PA) failures as early as possible.
  4. Designs power supply circuits based on previously used topologies to meet specific parameters, including loop stability, magnetic design, and worst-case component analysis.
  5. Understands new product release and engineering change procedures to support the product during and after its transition into manufacturing.
  6. Participates in yield and continuous improvement actions.
  7. Provides product test field failure analysis support. Performs simulation and evaluation, duplicates failures detected in the field, and provides Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and RCCA.
  8. Provides customer field failure analysis support. Attends customer meetings and presents failure analysis findings/root causes, providing effective RCCA and related preventative actions.
  9. Responsible for coordinating and delivering daily Failure Analysis WIP turnaround for daily production fulfillment, including Top-Level Assembly (TLA) and In Source Sub Assembly.
  10. Manages a group of technicians, coordinating Failure Analysis output based on customer demand. Provides training to FA technicians to ensure competence in the allocated Product Platform.
  11. Establishes and maintains the Failure Analysis Data pool, generating/enhancing Failure Analysis Guidelines to improve productivity and accuracy. Drives for yield improvement with various departments such as Production/Hybrid/Test/Process/SQE/Quality.
  12. Communicates with the Product Development/Engineering team regarding any unknown or complex failures for resolution within the shortest time.
  13. Acts as a core player in NPI/New derivative Part Number introduction. Conducts Failure Analysis for unknown technical issues and communicates with the Product Development/Engineering team for timely resolution.
  14. Provides disposition of defective parts in MRB meetings. Makes engineering decisions for Rework, RTV, Scrap with engineering data support.
  15. Acts as custodian for FA Non-Netting Inventory. Responsible for inventory accuracy and performing periodic inventory counts upon request from the Inventory Team.
  16. Adheres to organizational requirements on quality management, health and safety, code of conduct, legal stipulations, environmental policies, 5S policies, and general duty of care.
  17. Other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Location: Penang Science Park, Simpang Ampat.
  • Works in a fast-paced engineering/manufacturing lab environment.
  • Also works in a standard office environment and uses general office equipment (telephone, PC, copier, fax machine, etc.).
  • Works under limited supervision.
  • Completes many repetitive tasks that include the use of electronic assembly equipment.
  • Troubleshoots high voltage power supplies.
  • Operates sampling and real-time oscilloscopes, pulse generators, meters, power supplies, and special test fixtures.
  • Overtime may be necessary in times of increased demand.
  • Travel to international locations may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficient knowledge and troubleshooting skills in electronic circuits, components, PCBs, and manufacturing processes.
  • Strong knowledge of the physical structure, properties, and behavior of engineering materials to identify primary modes of failure for electrical components, PCBs, and assemblies.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to clearly convey factual learnings.
  • Ability to handle moderately complex engineering assignments.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment to resolve problems.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to be creative.
  • Engineering skills include FMEA/DOE and Reliability Engineering.
  • Ability to prepare CA/PA reports for internal or external customers.
  • Tooling is needed for troubleshooting/debug/testing theory/Engineering prototype units.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Over 10 years of working experience, including 5 years of experience in manufacturing technical engineering.
  • Ability to lead and coach failure analysis engineers at levels I & II.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with manufacturing members.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to understand manufacturing operating processes.
  • Ability to solve complex issues with speed and quality, with expert knowledge of electronic circuits.
  • Acts as a team leader to support complex and high-tech products, making schedules and timelines to manage projects.
  • Leads root cause analysis for PCBA yield improvement.
  • Electrical safety training (additional company safety courses may be required). Familiar with plant operation systems.
  • Good knowledge of 8D, FMEA, and lean manufacturing.
  • Electronic circuit troubleshooting skills.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic major or equivalent education.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in technical engineering.
  • Certified 6-sigma or equivalent statistical, problem-solving methodology.
