Prepare, assemble, prime and conduct extracorporeal circulation by handling the heart-lung machine to ensure adequate and safe perfusion throughout the surgical procedure.
Assemble, set up, and test the heart-lung machine, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine, Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) machine, hemodynamic monitoring equipment, Intra-Aortic Balloon pump, and cell savers to ensure that machines and associated equipment are functioning according to specifications.
Operate the heart-lung machine to regulate blood circulation and composition, administer drugs and anesthetic agents, and control body temperature during surgery or respiratory failure of the patient.
Review patient medical history and chart, and consult with the surgeon or physician to obtain patient information needed to set up the heart-lung machine and associated equipment.
Monitor and observe the operation of the heart-lung machine and patient’s physiologic variables such as blood temperature, blood composition, and flow rate, and adjust equipment to maintain normal body functions.
Ensure the availability of perfusion consumables.
Assist in the evaluation of new equipment and cardiac disposables pertaining to use for Cardiopulmonary bypass.
Clean and adjust parts of the heart-lung machine.
Communicate with the operating room team regarding the patient’s condition during surgery.
Assist in the upkeep of all OT electrical/gas systems.
Possess profound knowledge of surgical procedures, sterile methods, and operating room techniques and terminology.
Exhibit competent knowledge and skills in circulation procedures, principles, methods, and techniques.
