Assistant Manager (Legal and Compliance)

Job Title: Assistant Manager, Legal and Compliance

Location: MILA University

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Job Overview

The Manager of Legal and Compliance at MILA University will play a crucial role in ensuring that the institution adheres to all applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. This position will involve overseeing the university’s compliance programs, providing legal guidance, and ensuring operational and regulatory standards are met across the business. The Manager will work closely with various departments to promote a culture of compliance and ethical behaviour while addressing legal issues that may impact the university’s operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Legal:

  1. Draft, review, and revise agreements and contracts to ensure legal protection and compliance.
  2. Monitor and maintain legal database and secure filing system for the University’s legal documents, contracts, intellectual property applications, and related documents.
  3. Provide legal advice on a range of matters and manage legal correspondence, ensuring the University’s governance aligns with the Constitution, University legislation, and the broader University system.
  4. Conduct necessary legal research to keep abreast of applicable laws and regulations.
  5. Assist HR Department in any Industrial Relations (IR) issues to ensure compliance with employment laws.
  6. Troubleshoot and solve any legal, risk, and compliance issues that may arise.
  7. Serve as the primary liaison with external legal counsel and regulatory agencies.
  8. Provide employee training sessions on legal issues.
  9. Project manage ad-hoc projects & duties assigned by the superior or Management.

Compliance:

  1. Ensure that the University adheres to relevant laws, regulations, and standards by monitoring changes in legislation and implementing necessary changes to policies and procedures.
  2. Monitor and report on statutory and regulatory compliance requirements in all areas closely related to business operations.
  3. Draft and review internal policies, SOPs, and ensure compliance with internal controls, legal frameworks, and delegation of authority.
  4. Assist the COO with overall risk management and compliance monitoring, and prepare and coordinate quarterly reports for the CEO and the board.

Qualifications & Skills:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Law or higher.
  2. 3-5 years of work experience at a law firm and/or as an in-house legal counsel/Manager.
  3. Prior experience in the education sector is preferred but not mandatory.
  4. Attention to detail, excellent communication, and problem-solving skills.
  5. Result-oriented, able to work independently, self-motivated, organized, and able to manage deadlines.
  6. Strong written and verbal communication & interpersonal skills.
  7. Proficient in written & spoken English; knowledge of other languages is an advantage.
