Who we are: CIO Office

The CIO Office was established to institutionalize performance management and stewardship of the Portfolio as well as enhance capabilities of the Investments Division in Khazanah. There are 6 units within the CIO Office:

  1. Performance Reporting and Analytics (‘PRA’)
  2. Investment Strategy & Asset Allocation (‘ISAA’)
  3. Investments Monitoring (‘IM’)
  4. Stewardship
  5. Investments Compliance
  6. Division Administrative Support

The CIO Office is the strategic and operational engine room of the Investments Division in Khazanah.

What is Investment Monitoring?

Investment Monitoring is a systematic process involving analysis, evaluation, and oversight of the portfolio.

In Khazanah, the Investment Monitoring provides insights to the Senior Management team on Khazanah’s direct-holding portfolio to ensure alignment with investment thesis in achieving sustainable long-term returns and/or strategic goals.

What you will be doing:

A. Reporting & Review

The WHAT: IMU operates as a control tower to provide an overview of the direct-holdings portfolio to the oversight committee monthly. Some of the key deliverables are:

  • Form an independent view on direct holding companies based on independent research and dashboard inputs updated monthly by the Investment teams.
  • Review and synthesize monthly dashboard submitted by Investment teams and report on key updates to the relevant committee and for inputs to update reports.
  • Provide quarterly analysis on ex-post and ex-ante dividend and earnings of portfolio companies.
  • Track Value Creation Plans outlined by Investment teams to ensure execution is on track while identifying any challenges faced to facilitate escalation to the relevant committee.
  • Review Investment teams’ submission for annual cashflow planning and KPI, and track progress of portfolio turnover for inputs to the overall planning process.
  • Review the progress reports of investment programmes.

B. Value Creation & Monetisation

The WHAT: With oversight of the portfolio value at risk, IMU monitors Value Creation Plans by:

  • Discuss and assess value creation for the portfolio, particularly for the direct holding portfolio.
  • Monitor progress, valuation, time horizon, and exit planning for the direct holdings in the portfolio.
  • Work closely with Investment teams to analyze potential impact to portfolio companies and derive insights to facilitate relevant decision-making.

C. Other Responsibilities

  • Review guidelines and practices for portfolio management and monitoring, as well as reporting process.
  • Participate in internal and external business meetings to provide coordination support on cross-divisional initiatives regarding the Investments portfolio.
  • The Assistant Vice President is expected to work closely with the Senior Vice President on multiple touchpoints within and outside the Investments divisions.

What are the minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Degrees in Science-based / Social science-based fields are preferred; non-Science-based are still welcomed to apply subject to past exposure and may require more years of experience in the relevant field.
  • At least 2 years of relevant working experience (i.e. Public equity buy/sell side; Asset management (i.e. private equity/infrastructure funds).
  • Possess or exam candidates for CFA / CIPM would be advantaged.
  • Appreciation of various business/macro-economic philosophies (i.e. State Entrepreneurialism – Mariana Mazzucato, Lead & Disrupt – Michael L. Tushman); would be a plus.
  • Soft skills needed: Strong verbal/written communication; Good presentation skills; High tolerance for nuances. Think along the lines of Assertive Diplomacy.
