Researcher Profile: First Stage Researcher (R1)
Positions: PhD Positions
Country: Italy
Application Deadline: 31 Mar 2025 - 17:00 (Europe/Rome)
Type of Contract: To be defined
Job Status: Full-time
Is the job funded through the EU Research Framework Programme? Horizon Europe - MSCA Marie Curie Grant Agreement Number 101168734
Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? No
The PhD positions are part of the European Doctoral Network “AWETRAIN – Airborne Wind Energy TRAining for Industrialization Network”. AWETRAIN will recruit 12 PhD fellows at 4 research universities and 3 international companies from 5 European countries, who will meet regularly during exchange visits, training events, workshops, and summer schools organized by the network.
Both positions are at Politecnico di Milano. DC4 is in the field of automation and control, pairing methodological research with hands-on simulation and experimental activities. Its aim is the development of advanced optimal control and supervisory methods for long-term autonomous operation of Airborne Wind Energy systems. DC6 has a strong methodological focus in the field of complex systems integration, encompassing the understanding of various phenomena ranging from aerodynamics, control, and structures to holistic design. This is complemented by activities in modeling, simulation, and experimentation, which consists of modeling a single system and then a fleet of Airborne Wind Energy systems, with the goal of studying cooperative design logic and control to maximize the energy produced by the wind farm and minimize the cost of energy.
Ideal candidates should have a master's degree in one of the following disciplines or a related field: industrial engineering (e.g., control, mechanical, electronic, aerospace). They should have a good background or interest in mathematical optimization, dynamic system modeling and simulation, and programming (Matlab, C/C++, Python), as well as a desire to contribute to the development of airborne wind energy systems and the success of real-world experiments. Proficiency in English is a requirement. The positions adhere to the European policy of balanced ethnicity, age, and gender. Both men and women are encouraged to apply.
