The Social Media Manager, a new position at Trout Unlimited, will lead our national social media channel strategy to help us tell our story to new and more diverse audiences. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Communications and working closely with other staff in Marketing & Communications, the manager will be a key player in our digital efforts to drive engagement in TU’s mission and advance our marketing, communications, development, advocacy, and conservation goals. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a deep knowledge of social media channels and strategy, excellent messaging judgment, and a passion for connecting audiences with TU’s conservation mission.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Developing and executing a social media strategy that helps advance TU’s broader organizational goals
- Producing and aggregating compelling content for multiple social channels to promote TU’s messaging priorities, foster and grow our member and supporter base, and drive engagement with diverse audiences
- Listening to and connecting with TU’s social audiences by producing engaging responses in online conversations
- Growing our audiences on existing channels and building audiences on new channels
- Working with regional communications directors and other departments to leverage social media tools and channels to meet their program goals; creating campaign social media toolkits, graphics, and suggested messaging
- Managing paid social ads and campaigns in coordination with other staff and consultants
- Using digital analytics to measure the effectiveness of strategies and adapting accordingly to amplify impact; providing reports to leadership on TU’s social media presence
- Staying abreast of the fast-moving digital and social media trends, and innovating as platforms and algorithms evolve; acting as in-house expert on social media
- Conducting an audit of all TU social media channels across programs and departments and providing recommendations about their ongoing value and management
- Assessing the need for a social media advocate or ambassador program to expand TU’s presence into new markets
- Educating volunteer leaders on council and chapter social media strategy; producing social media toolkits and messaging to help volunteers support national objectives
- Ensuring a compelling, on-brand, and inclusive voice across TU’s social media channels
- Collaborating with the communications team to help coordinate strategy and tactics across the country
Requirements - Motivated and self-directed
- Demonstrated experience engaging diverse audiences with digital marketing strategies
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; three years’ experience in digital communications, marketing, or a related field required
- Knowledge of current and emerging social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube; experience using platform analytics to guide efforts
- Experience using a CRM system to track data, and using metrics to maximize effectiveness of digital strategies
- Experience with Facebook Business Manager for social media advertising
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills; ability to reach audiences with an engaging communications style
- Understanding of SEO strategies and writing techniques
- Basic graphic design and video skills a plus; ability to work within a set of brand guidelines
- Messaging savvy and judgment; ability to message inclusively and tailor communications in a way that resonates across political, demographic and geographic boundaries; ability to respond to and defuse negative sentiment on social channels
- Ability to multitask across multiple campaigns and projects
- A working knowledge of, or a willingness to learn about, trout and salmon conservation, policy, science, and fishing
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365
- Ability to build relationships and collaborate with remote colleagues and dispersed teams
