Technician on Computer Graphics for Mixed Reality Training Simulators
- (24000083)
Project: “Sistemi Cibernetici Collaborativi – Lavori in quota – Tecnologie per la Formazione in Realtà Virtuale” (Collaborative Cybernetic Systems – Working at height – Technologies for Virtual Reality training) in partnership with INAIL.
Commitment & contract: Employee, fixed term contract 25 months, or till the end of the project
Location: IIT CRIS – Via S. Quirico 19/D, Genova
THE ROLE
You will be working in a multi-disciplinary group, where people with different backgrounds collaborate, each with their own expertise, to support IIT research activity.
The Wearable Robots, Exoskeletons and Exosuits Laboratory (XoLab) and VICARIOS lab are part of the Advanced Robotics research line, directed by Prof. Darwin Caldwell. This research line focuses on an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to robot design and control, and the development of novel robotic components and technologies for applications in medical, surgical, and rehabilitation robotics, exoskeletons and force augmentation, manipulation and dexterous manipulators, telepresence and teleoperation, industrial automation and robotics, active perception and learning, inspection robotics, hyper-redundant robots, robot dynamics and “fast” robot and robots for hazardous environments.
The position is within XoLab and VICARIOS labs, coordinated by Dr. Jesus Ortiz and Dr. Yonas Tefera. These labs are an inter-disciplinary group, with experts in wearable robots, exoskeletons, human-computer interaction, VR/AR, telepresence, control modeling, biomechanical simulations, and human factors. The research outcomes are targeted at simplifying the lives of human operators (industrial workers, emergency responders, frontline workers) through advances in HCI paradigms. The project aims to develop and integrate technologies in immersive mixed-reality experiences to train and prevent accidents and protect workers working at heights.
Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:
- Create, edit, and optimize high-quality 3D models using Blender.
- Utilize Datasmith to streamline the transfer of 3D assets into Unreal Engine.
- Develop and maintain efficient workflows for Blender and Datasmith integration.
- Software development and programming in interactive virtual reality using Unreal Engine.
- Translate project proposal requirements into simple, clean, and efficient mixed-reality based software.
- Make decisions on the MR feature architecture and manage the implementation process.
- Work on improving and maintaining the code, fixing bugs, and resolving recurring issues.
- Build and maintain clear and efficient communication with the team and participate in demonstrations for the funding agency.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Master’s Degree OR excellent first degree and minimum 2 years’ experience in computer graphics or related fields.
- Excellent understanding of 3D asset optimization techniques.
- Required experience developing software for interactive and immersive user interaction systems using Blender and virtual reality, e.g., Unreal, Unity.
- Experience with version control software, e.g., git (GitHub, Gitlab, etc.)
- Good command of spoken and written English.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS
- Proven experience with Blender and Datasmith.
- Experience with Unreal Engine (both C++ and Blueprints) to develop engine plugins is a definite plus.
- Strong portfolio showcasing expertise in 3D modeling and real-time asset integration.
- Proficiency in Unreal Engine or similar real-time rendering platforms.
- Exposure to graphics such as rendering engines, shaders, 3D modeling is a plus.
- Ability to work in a challenging and international environment.
- Capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment.
- Possess analytical reasoning skills and a growth mindset.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
- A yearly gross salary ranging between 28000 and 31000 euros, which may include a bonus option depending on your role and contract.
- Private health care coverage depending on your role and contract.
- Two days of teleworking per week and flexible working hours are available for certain roles.
- Meal vouchers depending on your work contract.
