Short description of the position:
Eurac Research is an interdisciplinary research center located in Bolzano, Italy. At the Center for Sensing Solutions (CSS) we develop tailor-made solutions for research in alpine applications. Our approach consists in exploiting the full data life cycle, from collection to the analysis and dissemination of Data.
Because of recent projects that use aerial and terrestrial robotic platforms in the domain of Forestry monitoring and Mountain rescue applications, we are looking for a motivated person with experience in instrumentation and robotics. This is an exciting role for someone with a passion for control engineering, robotics, simulation, and AI technologies. The candidate will have the chance to work on a variety of challenging, real-world problems in complex terrains (The Alps – living Lab). The ideal candidate will have strong hardware (sensor-based data) engineering skills and enjoy solving complex, multifaceted technical challenges. Experience with mechatronic and robotic systems is a plus.
The successful applicant will support the development of ad-hoc solutions to monitor forests based on ground and aerial unmanned vehicles (UGV/UAV) with multiple sensors, and developing strategies to support Search and Rescue operations based on UGV/UAVs.
Tasks:
- To design and build data multisensory workflows to monitor forest structure and tree health.
- To design and build data workflows that support Search and Rescue Mountain operations (RGB and thermal imagery, radiofrequency and sound sensors).
- To propose new methods to accelerate Search and Rescue Mountain operations (eg. Machine learning approaches for autonomous navigation).
- To assist diverse testing experiments and data collection in Alpine environments.
- Support the design, code and test of software automatic tools.
Requirements:
- Master studies in a relevant scientific field (i.e. Electronics, electrical engineering, control or equivalent).
- Good knowledge of programming at low and high level (C/C++, assembler, Python).
- Good knowledge of handling hardware (navigation systems and payloads).
- Good knowledge and experience on Machine Learning approaches (oriented to navigation systems).
- Knowledge and experience in GIS analysis with tool such as GIS, QGIS is considered a plus.
- Experience in use of version control software (e.g., Git).
- Good knowledge of English, written and spoken.
- Good knowledge of Italian and/or German, written and spoken, is desirable, but not essential.
- Ability to work independently and in team.
