Position Summary
The Laboratory Assistant in Chemical and Biological Engineering will support Dr. Laura Bracaglia in running her research program. The responsibilities of this job include a 50:50 split between research activities related to material development and drug delivery experiments, and administrative and organizational activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- The individual will be responsible for helping to synthesize polymers, and to formulate and characterize nanoparticles. They will also be responsible for maintaining cell cultures, and conducting and analyzing assays using flow cytometry, microscopy, and other assays to describe cell-NP interactions.
- The individual will be responsible for administrative duties required to sustain the research program, including purchasing and storing supplies, the repair and maintenance of equipment, data management policies, and safety and animal protocol documentation and compliance.
- The individual is expected to prepare research findings for inclusion in peer-reviewed journals or presentations in national or international conferences.
- The individual will meet with the research team (fellow researchers, faculty, and other industry peers) to share research progress and inspire new ideas during group brainstorming.
- Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Formal Education- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Material Science, or related field
Work Experience- Undergraduate lab experience
Work Skills- Must have strong communication, organizational and problem-solving skills. The individual must be able to work independently as well as with others in a productive manner.
Specific Job Knowledge- The individual must have basic lab experience provided at the undergraduate student level
Equipment Knowledge- The individual must have strong written and verbal communication skills including being well-versed in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Power Point

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours
- Tools, machinery and equipment used: Basic lab equipment and software, working at chemical fume hoods and biosafety cabinets.
- Environmental conditions: There will be exposure to moderately hazardous chemicals (organic solvents) and biological samples, however, risk is mitigated with proper handling techniques and environmental precautions.
- Physical requirements: Manual dexterity to operate basic wet lab tools (utilizing pipettes, pouring liquids, massing reagents).
