While mineral fertilisers, though effective in promoting crop growth, contribute to soil degradation, water and air pollution, biofertilisers appear to offer important benefits such as improved soil health, reduced environmental impact and enhanced nutrient cycling.
The aim of the research is to find new technologies for separating nutrients from waste biomass. In particular, the aim is to evaluate the parameters that facilitate the precipitation of a phosphorus and nitrogen salt, struvite, from the by-product of the anaerobic digestion of various biomasses. The second objective is to evaluate the performance of struvite as a fertiliser in a soil-plant system, determining the nutrient use efficiency of plants and the mitigation of environmental impact.
