Echo Technician-PRN

Overview

The Echocardiograph Technologist uses ultrasonic equipment to produce two-dimensional ultrasonic images and Doppler flow analysis of the heart and related structures for use by physicians in the diagnosis of heart disease and study of the heart. This individual explains procedures to the patient to obtain cooperation and reduce anxieties. The Echocardiograph Technologist attaches electrodes to the patient's chest to monitor heart rhythm and adjusts equipment controls according to protocol to enhance visualization of areas of the heart to be examined.

The Echo Technologist enters patient information into a computer keyboard to record information into the image storage system and properly utilizes ultrasonic equipment to produce real-time tomographic images of cardiac anatomy. He/she moves the transducer by hand over the patient's heart, using standard and non-standard views to observe the ultrasound display screen and produces Doppler signals to acquire data for measurement of blood flow velocities. This individual properly uses the Echo reporting and archival system to make a permanent record of the cardiac examination and reviews test results with the interpreting physician, completing other procedures as needed in the Department of Cardiology Services.

The Echo Technologist may also be expected to perform the following tasks:

1. Transport patients
2. Perform portable echocardiograms
3. Inject non-radioactive Echo/Ultrasound contrast agents
4. Start IVs
5. Perform off-campus echocardiograms
