Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) is one of Ireland’s largest acute teaching and learning hospitals. The Hospital has 450 inpatient adult beds, 74 onsite day beds for various services, and is staffed by over 3,500 people with 64 different nationalities represented on the team.

Purpose of the Role:
The post holder will actively contribute to the delivery and promotion of health and well-being services in the workplace, maintaining a high standard of care and meeting performance targets for quality of service.

Overview of Role:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and develop quality occupational health services in line with best evidence-based practice and legal requirements.
  • Conduct independent medical assessments of healthcare workers referred through the agreed management referral process.
  • Provide clear, concise, and timely advice on the effective rehabilitation of healthcare workers to management/HR.
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders regarding staff immunisation and oversee healthcare worker surveillance programmes.
  • Advise management on Occupational Health issues, including operation of relevant sections of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Acts.
  • Contribute to Health Promotion programmes for staff.
  • Identify workplace hazards, undertake risk assessments, and implement appropriate monitoring and control mechanisms.
  • Participate in TUH/HSE hospital committees relating to staff safety.

Administrative & Managerial Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the multidisciplinary Occupational Health Service teams.
  • Manage the Occupational Health Service and supervise staff assigned to the Unit.
  • Contribute to service planning and advise on modernisation of the Occupational Health Services.

Training & Education:

  • Ensure that the Occupational Health Service meets the necessary criteria to be an approved training site for Specialist Registrars.
  • Provide Clinical Supervision for Specialist Registrars.
  • Participate in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Data and Research:

  • Facilitate production of all data/information required to validate delivery of duties.
  • Undertake regular evaluation of the effectiveness of the service.
  • Develop and coordinate clinical, laboratory, and other research as appropriate.

Professional Qualifications and Experience:

  • Hold registration on the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland in the specialist division for Occupational Health Medicine.
  • Possess the requisite knowledge and ability for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
  • Possess a high standard of professional attainment.

Reward & Recognition:

  • Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales, €165,188 – 198,226 pro rata.
  • The appointment is temporary part-time and pensionable for 2 years.
  • The annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata.
  • Normal working hours are one day per week (7.4 hours).
