Organizational Setting

The UN-REDD Programme is the United Nations collaborative initiative on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) in developing countries. The Programme assists developing countries to prepare to implement REDD+, including the development of National REDD+ Strategies, following guidance issued by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of FAO Representative in Indonesia and REDD+ team coordinator in FAO HQ; under the technical supervision of the responsible Forestry Officer, and project Lead Technical Officer at the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) with close coordination with the National Social Forestry and Climate Change specialist, project team in RAP and government focal point(s).

Technical Focus

The specialist is expected to develop a methodology on carbon measurement for the social forestry models in Indonesia.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Assessment of standards and approaches: Review and compare international standards (e.g., Verra, Plan Vivo) and approaches (e.g., IPCC, methods used by Indonesia for UNFCCC reporting) relevant to FOLU activities/REDD+.
  • Compilation of Information: Gather data on GHG emission reduction calculations from existing social forestry projects and initiatives.
  • Challenges and Opportunities: Identify specific challenges in measuring GHG emissions reductions and removals within social forestry.
  • Methodology development: Create a detailed methodology tailored to the specific needs and circumstances of social forestry in Indonesia.
  • Validation and Consultation: Compile feedback and results from consultation with relevant stakeholders to improve draft methodology.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in forestry, environment, or natural resource management.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in forestry as well as in field forest practices.
  • Working knowledge of English and Bahasa Indonesia.
  • National of Indonesia or resident in the country with a valid work permit.

FAO Core Competencies

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Knowledge of the requirements for national climate reporting, IPCC guidelines, carbon standard and GHG inventories is required.
  • Hands-on experience in carbon accounting and reporting.
  • Knowledge of tools for spatial analysis and carbon accounting is required.
  • In-depth understanding of concepts and actions on REDD+, climate change and Social Forestry.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize large amounts of data into analytical and practical knowledge/information.
  • Domain expertise in forestry and excellent sectoral contact is a plus.
  • Excellent communication, writing and presentation skills in English and Bahasa Indonesia.
