Location: Cardiff office, CF10 3BD / home based (hybrid)

Salary: £31,676 per annum

Who we are:

The Electoral Commission is the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. We work to promote public confidence in the democratic process and ensure its integrity.

We focus on the issues that affect Wales and oversee all areas of work relating to electoral events that take place in Wales. This includes the annual household canvass of electors, elections to the Senedd, UK Parliament, Police and Crime Commissioner and local government elections.

The Electoral Commission has a statutory duty to comply with the Welsh Language Standards, created in line with the Welsh Language Measure (2011). We are committed to the principle that in our day-to-day business, and provision of resources and services, the Welsh and English languages are treated on a basis of equality.

Welsh Language Support Officer – The Role:

Working as part of a small team, the post-holder will have responsibility primarily for supporting the Welsh Language Unit within the Commission on a number of different areas to help us meet with the commitments set out in the statutory Welsh Language Standards.

Welsh Language Support Officer – Key Responsibilities:

  1. Be the key administrator within the translation team, monitoring the translation requests, allocating translations to team members and liaising with customers.
  2. Support the translation team by translating and proofreading small pieces of work in line with the Commission’s Welsh Language Standards and corporate style guidelines, working to agreed timescales and using translation software.
  3. Support and advise colleagues across the Commission on developing Welsh language content, helping to ensure that we meet our statutory commitments set out in the Welsh language standards.
  4. Input Welsh content onto our website using content management software.
  5. Promote Welsh language awareness across the Commission, and assist in dealing with Welsh language queries internally.
  6. Play a part in planning and prioritising translation working closely with Commission teams and directorates in other parts of the UK.
  7. Other aspects of the Commission’s work in Wales, such as developing bilingual communications materials or working with external stakeholders and partners.
  8. Become familiar with all areas of the Commission’s work, and develop a close working relationship with colleagues based at various locations across the UK.

Welsh Language Support Officer – You:

  1. Educated to degree level in Welsh or equivalent experience of using Welsh in the workplace to a high level both written and oral.
  2. Attention to detail and accuracy with a high standard of quality checking of written Welsh and English.
  3. Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work well under pressure and prioritise multiple projects effectively.
  4. Strong interpersonal and negotiating skills, confident dealing with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  5. Excellent written communication skills, with ability to use plain language to communicate content in a clear style.
  6. High level of IT literacy, to include: MS Word, Outlook, Excel.
