Job Description

The Welder Co-Op will train in a heavy industrial welding setting. The goal of this role is to increase the knowledge and skills of a student.

Classifications

  • Possesses limited understanding of blueprint reading. Demonstrate the aptitude and skills to advance in print reading.
  • Capable of welding using the FCAW process.
  • Must demonstrate the aptitude and skills to advance in welding.
  • Capable of using the Air Carbon Arc process.
  • Must demonstrate the aptitude and skills to advance in weld groove preparations.
  • Able to produce welds suitable for non-critical tooling applications.

Essential Functions Performed by the Position

  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and interpret weld symbols.
  • Weld on thick plate. Test and qualify 2G and 3G carbon plate.
  • Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and overhead cranes to perform welding tasks.
  • Inspect and test welds for quality and size requirements.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, project managers, and other team members to plan and execute welding projects efficiently and effectively.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues or problems that may arise during the process.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of welding theory.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to operate and maintain measurement instruments, tools, and equipment used in heavy machinery teardown, repair, and assembly.
  • Excellent understanding of safety guidelines and regulations related to welding.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with precision.
  • Good problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot fabrication-related issues.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

Currently enrolled in a vocational program or secondary welding program. We are seeking a Welder Co-Op. This position is open to individuals who are currently enrolled in a Welder Trainee program, either Seniors in a High School vocational program or anyone enrolled in a post-secondary program. This will give hands-on training to complement the program that they are currently enrolled in. This could also lead to permanent employment after graduation.

Environment and Working Conditions

  • Work is conducted in an indoor fabrication shop environment.

Travel Requirements (percent)

  • Travel is not required but may be available on a voluntary basis.
