Do you have a keen interest in Environmental Policy and an enthusiasm for developing solutions to complex and challenging problems? Are you looking for the ideal opportunity to take your career in environmental consultancy to the next level? If so, we are seeking a high-calibre consultant or senior consultant to join our Environmental Policy and Economics team with a focus on Water Policy.

Our team has a long established and evolving business delivering environmental consultancy and advice to clients within the UK, the EU and worldwide. This role will sit within our Environmental Policy and Economics team, which focuses on delivering sustainability advisory services, working in partnership with our clients to deliver the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our Environmental Policy and Economics Team is at the forefront of providing policy, technical and economic advice on the development and implementation of environmental policy and business response to policy. In the field of water policy, we work alongside our WSP team of water specialists, who cover all aspects of water science, as well as technical experts across other relevant technical disciplines such as climate change.

Our current projects in the area of Water Policy are for customers such as the European Commission, the European Environment Agency, national governments across Europe including the UK, international organisations (e.g. World Bank), industry associations and companies. Our projects directly influence the development and improvement of environmental policies at national and international level.

The successful candidate would both support and lead the delivery of projects, and in winning new work. We are particularly interested in candidates who have some water science background – either academic or through work experience – which would help inform the implementation of some of the technical aspects of these projects.

If you have: a keen interest and proven experience in public policy on water; are able to analyse and interrogate data; and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing, then we want to hear from you.

A little more about your role…

This role will support WSP’s Environmental Policy and Economics Team, working with a range of clients in industry, local and national government bodies and/or international institutions.

Working across multiple projects to provide solutions for our clients, you will be comfortable working in a team environment, be self-starting and ready to take the initiative to make effective decisions. As Senior Consultant, you will have the opportunity to manage projects and lead the preparation of proposals to secure new work for the team. You will have experience in a consultancy environment or other relevant industry with a core specialism in water policy. As Consultant, you will support project managers with the delivery of projects and proposals, and you will have the opportunity to manage tasks.

You will work in multi-disciplinary teams, contributing to policy development, implementation and evaluation; cost-benefit analysis; information/data collection and analysis; stakeholder consultation; report writing and verbal presentation.

You will join an enthusiastic and supportive team and experience a challenging and fulfilling work environment. There are opportunities for ongoing and structured career development within the field of Water Policy and across WSP’s wider consultancy business.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

  • Knowledge and proven experience working in the development and/or implementation of water policy and legislation (such as the Water Framework Directive, Drinking Water Directive, Floods Directive)
  • A keen interest in furthering your career in water policy
  • Demonstrable experience in standard techniques in policy development and implementation: policy development and implementation; evaluation of technical/policy measures; cost-benefit analysis; data collection, validation and analysis; and stakeholder consultation (with a focus on water policy)
  • Analytical techniques such as: survey design and execution; market analysis; socio-economic analysis; regulatory impact assessment
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to write concise reports in English
