Waste Education Officer
You will have the opportunity to work flexibly across the working day to meet the needs of the business; your normal working week will be Tuesday to Friday 07.30 - 17.15, 37 hours.
£13.26 per hour.

Waste Education Officer - To represent the local authority in delivering high quality refuse and recycling services, with emphasis given to educating residents on how to appropriately recycle. Working with stakeholders and project partners to increase public awareness and encourage participation in recycling activities across Sunderland.
Work as a team or individually to contribute to improving environmental standards in Sunderland through challenging, influencing, educating and reducing residents' production of household waste and increasing the volume and quality of recycling that is produced.
Key Responsibilities
- To represent the Authority by providing information, education and direction to members of the public and other interested parties regarding effective and efficient recycling and waste disposal best practices.
- To work as part of a team and individually to promote the refuse & recycling service with particular emphasis on the correct and appropriate ways to dispose of waste and recycling.
- Carry out daily canvassing duties and assessments in relation to the refuse and recycling service, specifically the recycling of household and occasionally commercial waste. Monitor customer compliance with service requirements while offering support, advice and guidance on the correct presentation of waste.
- Advise the public on contamination issues relating to the kerbside recycling collection scheme and signpost residents to alternative options for waste reduction or disposal of waste unsuitable for resident's kerbside bins such as small and large electricals, large items and other difficult wastes.
- Record and monitor requests for information received and address any complaints from members of the public in a timely manner. Use email and other service area software packages to provide specific advice and support to residents.
- To undertake visits, carry out assessments and monitoring in order to respond to customer needs including assessing the need for additional medical waste bins, larger recycling bins, assisted collection or the provision of replacement wheelie bins.
- Undertake waste audits to support the enforcement of Policies. You are expected to wear a body camera to facilitate completion of reports and data relating to interactions with residents.
- Carry out day-to-day maintenance and health and safety checks of the vehicles in accordance with policy.
- Undertake other duties to assist in fulfilling its duties commensurate with the current grade of the post.
- Provide on-site training and mentoring to other team members and apprentices where required as well as liaise with recycling and refuse collection teams and advocates working within the Customer Service Network.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions. The job is physically demanding.
- Work flexibly, covering and supporting the service in line with the needs of work.
- You may be required to work on weekends and Bank/Public holidays, as well as between Christmas and New Year.

- Carry out such duties as may be required by the service as appropriate to the post.
Minimum Requirements- Full UK Driving Licence
- Ability to develop knowledge experience of or undertake all aspects of environmental maintenance delivered by the service.
- Using Information Technology to report and record.
- Able to communicate effectively verbally in person or over the phone, and in writing to obtain information.
- Able to provide excellent customer service by delighting customers and delivering high-quality tailored services to meet their needs and exceed expectations.
- Able to work effectively within a busy team environment, or independently.
