Ward Manager Beech C

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, motivated band 7 Ward Manager to join Beech C ward. The successful applicant will be dynamic and looking to develop themselves within the surgical division.

The role requires you to be an experienced, confident exceptional Leader. Our nursing values are the 6 Cs and the Ward Manager is seen as key to achieving the highest standards of care for our patients. It is essential you have highly developed management leadership expertise in dealing with people both individually and in a team. You will need to effectively engage with your patients, peer groups, and service users in all elements of your role, leading by example and promoting a supportive, compassionate and caring culture. This will require an inclusive, transparent, open approach to your role, whereby you are accountable to others and go that extra mile when required.

You will be passionate about our Trust values and ambitions and creating a culture of continuous improvement, where patients are at the heart of all you do. You will act as a role model, be inspirational, dynamic and a courageous individual.

You will be supported by a team comprising of a Matron, Divisional Director of Nursing, Deputy Director of Nursing and General Manager.

Main duties of the job

  1. To ensure a high standard of nursing care at all times through the effective management of staff and resources on his or her allocated department.
  2. To demonstrate strong clinical leadership in stressful and challenging situations.
  3. To promote a positive approach to new challenges and creative ways of working.
  4. To act as an advocate for their designated area and liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to coordinate all aspects of patient care in the best interests of the patient and family.
  5. To ensure effective training and educational programmes are available by liaising with appropriate personnel to meet the training and educational needs of nurses in the clinical area.

Job responsibilities

Key Working Relationships with General management, Senior and junior medical and nursing staff, ward clerks, facilities staff, other health care professionals, social workers, other care providers, patients and their relatives, volunteers.

Job Purpose:

To ensure a high standard of nursing care at all times through the effective management of staff and resources on his or her allocated department.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Accept personal responsibility and accountability for your infection prevention and control practice. Ensure that you are familiar with, and comply with, all relevant policies.
  2. Develop practice in the assessment of health and wellbeing needs.
  3. Develop practice in addressing individuals' health and wellbeing needs.
  4. Promote people's equality, diversity and rights.
  5. Assess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care, coordinating the holistic needs of the patients.
  6. Take measures to ensure the safety of patients, which includes delegation of patient care to nurses with the appropriate levels of skills at all times.
  7. Establish and maintain communication with individuals and groups about difficult or complex matters, overcoming any problems in communication.
  8. Lead work teams in the development of knowledge, ideas and work practice.

Clinical Governance
  1. Promote best practice in health, safety and security.

  3. Facilitate research-based practice within their Ward and ensure appropriate implementation.
  4. Ensure that nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with the Policies of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
  5. Ensure good standards of practice in the Ward through effective quality assurance measures such as clinical audit programmes.
  6. Monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies.

Management
  1. Ensure that a duty rota for the staff within the Ward will provide effective and well-balanced cover to meet with the requirements of a 24-hour service.
  2. Liaise with other Ward/Department Managers within the Directorate and other Directorates as necessary.
  3. Allocate, coordinate, monitor and assess the work of teams and individuals.
  4. Manage the Ward and Unit allocated budget effectively to remain within financial constraints.
  5. Ensure effective two-way communication with all disciplines so that patients receive optimum care.

Staff Development
  1. Ensure all staff reach their full potential by enabling them to develop professional, clinical, managerial and communication skills.
  2. Plan and participate in the teaching programmes of learners in accordance with their objectives.
  3. Develop the role of nursing within their specialty Ward and undertake training and assessment to extend clinical skills as appropriate to the Ward.

  1. Maintain a professional attitude at all times, developing the role of the nurse in the best interest of the patient.
  2. Promote a positive attitude for the profession and the Trust within which you are working.
