UX Engineer – Design System

Full time contract (6 months) / Contract (Inside IR35)

London / Hybrid – Old Broad St

Working pattern: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week.

Job Description:

We’ve placed an ambitious transformation programme and a multi-channel approach to banking at the heart of our strategy to be the best bank for customers, backed by significant investment in our platforms and people over the next three years.

We serve millions of customers every day, from individuals and families to large businesses and corporations. This means we’re well-placed to help Britain prosper by shaping the way we spend, save and borrow.

About the opportunity

Within the Commercial Banking design team, we are transforming how users experience their products and services. We’re on the lookout for a senior UX engineer to join our creative team. You’ll be leading the charge in transforming our experiences for business and commercial banking customers, ensuring production-grade quality delivery coupled with delightful and accessible experiences.

Working in a multi-disciplinary design, product, and engineering team, you’ll be at the forefront of developing the code libraries for the design system – for a key area of our business. You’ll also be supported by our wider Experience Design and Engineering communities.

A hybrid role operating between a developer and UX designer, you’ll be responsible for:

  1. Planning and codifying components, templates, or design patterns for our design and engineering communities. Working with user experience designers within the team, you’ll work cohesively to integrate your best-in-class engineering principles while adhering to the latest design best practices. This will require taking prototypes and designs within Figma and identifying common components and patterns that codify these in our design system for software engineers to access and use in their everyday work.
  2. Programming the front-end: use React, styled-components, or similar to create interactive layouts, features, or execute other design ideas.
  3. Collaborating with UX and engineering teams: As a professional with both design and programming abilities, act as the bridge between the two teams. Work with designers, back-end engineers, and writers to develop products and services.

Experience / Skills

This role is an intersection between a front-end software engineer and a web/UI designer and engineer. Experience/skills required:

  1. A solid understanding of programming fundamentals - Experience coding in various languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  2. A strong advocacy for UX, mastery at UI implementation - Experience working with UX designers and implementation of UX principles & practices in your work.
  3. Bi-lingual in pixels and pointers.
  4. Prior experience working on design systems – Developing tokens and theming to enable designs to be translated to variables, ensuring a seamless transition from design to code.
  5. Experience with tools such as Figma or Adobe Creative Suite.
  6. Experience as a UX engineer or similar role (e.g., front-end software engineer), with proficiency in React, CSS, and Figma libraries.
  7. Excellent attention to detail, implementing and maintaining user interfaces with a passion for creating inclusive and accessible designs.
  8. Writing production-quality code with a strong focus on performance and maintainability, staying abreast of technology and elevating our design benchmarks.

What you’ll be doing

  1. Working collaboratively with designers, engineers, and product owners to iterate designs and prototypes, identifying and raising issues as early in the lifecycle as possible.
  2. Acting as a bridge that ties design and engineering teams together.
  3. Implementing UIs and writing production code.
  4. Integrating prototypes and design components/design patterns into the software development life cycle.
  5. Building tools to improve the UX process.
  6. Building inclusive products that delight users.
  7. Communicating the value provided to cross-functional partners.
  8. Staying current on tooling trends and disruptive technologies being deployed.
  9. Advocating for content strategy, creative directions, and raising engineering complexities.

No week is likely to be the same, with opportunities to develop the discipline across wider Business Units in the future.
