Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a well-established Urology Specialist Nursing team, to care for patients undergoing prostate, bladder, kidney, penile, testicular and retro-peritoneal sarcoma cancer surgical and medical oncology treatments at The Christie Hospital in Manchester.
The successful candidate will be an experienced urology/oncology/surgical nurse, highly motivated and driven to improve patient care and experience. You will be an excellent communicator and will have the opportunity to use your clinical and professional leadership skills to encourage and promote best outcomes for patients, their relatives and carers.
Excellent interpersonal skills are paramount for this post together with confidence to engage and work with a range of colleagues at all levels and from all professional groups.

Main Duties of the Job
- Provide specialist, expert Urological clinical knowledge and support to colleagues, patients and carers/relatives both within and outside the Trust.
- Perform a comprehensive keyworker role for Urology cancer patients throughout their care pathway at The Christie Hospital.
- Work closely with teams at referring centres and GMCA to ensure that patient pathways of care are streamlined.
- Play an integral role in the operational and strategic development of specialist services for Christie Urology in-patients and out-patients.
- Be a highly visible and approachable role model, ensuring that best practice is disseminated throughout the clinical areas.
- Actively contribute to any relevant initiatives within the care group and provide support to senior colleagues.
- Provide clinical expertise for developing and enhancing Urology Surgical and Oncological treatment services.
- Develop and run nurse led clinics and services, undertaking highly specialised technical and practical skills.
- Use advanced communication skills in a variety of settings to facilitate difficult conversations around treatment plans, progressive disease, advanced care planning for end of life care.
- Use Level 2 psychological skills to assess patients for psychological and/or emotional distress and initiate robust support and management plans, referring to other services as appropriate.

Job Responsibilities
CLINICAL
- Perform a comprehensive Key Worker role for Urology cancer patients during their care pathway at the Christie Hospital. Provide expert specialist advice to patients, relatives, carers and other health care professionals in relation to a Urological cancer diagnosis.
- Develop and maintain advanced clinical skills in assessment and knowledge of diagnosis and treatment options for the patient.
- Liaise with other Clinical Nurse Specialists, Cancer Pathway Coordinators, other professionals (including those from referring units), to ensure effective transfer of information across different NHS organisations and a smooth pathway of care.
- Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records in line with clinical governance and risk management.
- Work independently, managing own case load of patients.
- Use advanced communication skills in a variety of settings. This will include discussions around patient care and treatment plans with patients, carers, relatives and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Provide emotional support to patients, their families and staff during difficult situations e.g. breaking bad news or following an unexpected event.
- Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of care and development of services to enhance the patient and carer experience.
- Develop and run nurse led clinics and undertake highly specialised technical and practical skills. This may include advanced health assessments and non-medical prescribing to ensure optimum patient management.
