Job Description:

Looking for a role that will have a meaningful impact on underwriting performance for Markel International?

We are looking for an individual to promote technical pricing best standards through the ownership of the International Pricing Standards.

What part will you play? If you’re looking for a place where you can make a meaningful difference, you’ve found it. The work we do at Markel gives people the confidence to move forward and seize opportunities, and you’ll find your fit amongst our global community of optimists and problem-solvers. We’re always pushing each other to go further because we believe that when we realize our potential, we can help others reach theirs.

Join us and play your part in something special!

The opportunity:

As part of the Office of the Chief Underwriting Officer (OCUO), you will be responsible for the strategy, drafting and ensuring divisional underwriting activity adheres to best practice, through formal and informal reviews.

You will be required to build relationships across all underwriting divisions, across a number of locations from Canada through to the UK and Europe to Asia and Australia as well as with departments including Actuarial and Portfolio Analytics.

What you’ll be doing:

  1. Responsible for International Pricing Standards, ensuring these are in line with industry best practice.
  2. Conduct pricing reviews, ensuring technical pricing capability is aligned to internal and external standards.
  3. Report the results of these activities to the Underwriting Committee and ensure, by working with underwriting divisions, that remediation is evidenced to the satisfaction of Risk, Compliance and Internal Audit.
  4. Advise & input on International technical pricing strategy.
  5. Support preparation of self-attestation to Lloyd’s under Principles for Doing Business Pillar 1: Underwriting Profitability.
  6. Support whole account portfolio management activities, making sure underwriting is in accord with Markel’s International Portfolio Management Standards and applicable external standards.
  7. Support re-underwriting activities where necessary, ensuring quantification of underwriting actions is realistic.
  8. Advise and input on International portfolio management framework, ensuring the best possible chance of achieving required underwriting returns across the cycle.
  9. Review and support production of external returns, including to Lloyd’s, ensuring their timeliness and adherence to Markel’s standards.
  10. Work closely with underwriting leadership to understand Markel’s product lines and the business planning, pricing and portfolio management considerations for each.
  11. Implement the above through collaboration with, and delegation to, local underwriting and oversight teams across Markel’s regions, with as little activity taking place within OCUO as possible.

Our must-haves:

  1. Advanced understanding of insurance, reinsurance and actuarial concepts.
  2. An actuarial qualification is encouraged but not essential.
  3. An ability to keep up to date with Markel’s products and the global PEST factors affecting their risks and performance.
  4. Ability to problem solve with limited support on ambiguous requests or requirements.
  5. An ability to understand the key features of Markel’s insurance products and reinsurance treaties.
  6. An ability to build relationships and credibility with senior underwriting and managing directors across International and at Group level, and thus able to maintain their support for the team’s activities.

  3. Fantastic company pension scheme, private medical and dental cover, life assurance, travel insurance cover, income protection, season ticket loan as well as other great benefits on offer.
