The Vacancy

Function/Area: Underwriting Life Science

Reporting to: Class Manager or AVP Underwriting

Position Summary

Manages the Life Science underwriting team and is accountable for the business results through profitability, business development, analysis and monitoring of a book of business. Under general management direction, works within broad limits of authority requiring a high degree of technical complexity and coordination. Technical knowledge in the Life Science Sector whilst helping to manage existing and new business accounts and identifying new business opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Manage the work activities, performance and development of subordinate staff.
  2. Coach, lead and develop underwriters and participate in the development of underwriting training.
  3. Make recommendations on underwriting policy and pricing strategy to management.
  4. Review and manage the application of underwriting policy and pricing for all risks within an assigned book of business.
  5. Prepare and present operational reports to management.
  6. Drive regional and branch initiatives and business strategies.
  7. Lead the process of marketing products and services through various brokers.
  8. Develop, maintain and cultivate broker relationships to ensure positive and profitable outcomes for the segment and line of business.
  9. Lead, document, monitor and measure the underwriting team with their broker relationship management.
  10. Keep current on territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends. May participate in industry trade groups.
  11. Comply with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and ensure that, at a level appropriate to the position, appropriate measures are in place to ensure this compliance.
  12. May perform additional duties as agreed.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  1. High level of ability to effectively lead, coach and develop underwriting staff.
  2. Advanced technical expertise within Life Science Sector, underwriting skill and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures.
  3. Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
  4. Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage and prioritise multiple projects.
  5. Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues.
  6. Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems.
  7. Ability to achieve business goals and objectives.
  8. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
  9. Appropriate knowledge of all relevant regulatory and legal requirements applicable to the position.
