We are looking to appoint a Trust Senior Clinical Fellow in Robotics, within the Department of Colorectal surgery at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, Derriford Hospital, Devon. This post is a role intended for surgeons who are towards the end of their specialist training (ST8 or above), either seeking employment as a consultant or who wish to further their clinical experience before taking up appointment to a consultant position.
This is a Trust appointment and is not a formal training post with deanery or Royal College approval for training purposes. You will however receive extensive training in all aspects of Robotic colorectal surgery.
This is a full-time, 1-year post, available to commence from October 2025.
The emphasis of this post will be on the management of patients operated by robotic approach. The role will involve a commitment to the emergency surgery on-call rota doing evening +/- day shifts one week in 5/6 and some weekend working. The commitment to the general surgery on-call rota is significantly less than a standard registrar post - with the intent that the appointee will concentrate on honing the skills required in robotic surgery. It will also involve full commitment to the day-to-day running of the Colorectal unit. A trainee will have the opportunity to attain experience in Robotic surgery as well as gain further training in colonoscopy.
The trainee will complete all the modules of simulation training in robotic surgery. He/she will be expected to prepare and analyse all the robotic cases and undertake audit and research on robotic surgery. The trainee will have modular training in robotic surgery leading to supervised cases and will be encouraged to present cases at international conferences. At the end of the fellowship, we expect the trainee to be able to perform robotic surgery independently.
University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is the largest hospital in the Southwest peninsula and a major trauma centre, providing comprehensive secondary and tertiary healthcare.
Our geography gives us a secondary care catchment population of 450,000 with a wider peninsula population of almost 2,000,000 people who can access our specialist services. The population is characterised by its diversity - the rural and the urban, the wealthy and pockets of deprivation, and wide variance in health and life expectancy. Population ageing is a recognised national trend, but is exacerbated locally by the drift of younger people out of the area and older people in. The proportion of our population aged 85 or over is growing ahead of the national average by approximately 10 years and we have developed a Population Health Strategy in response to this demographic shift.
We work within a network of other hospitals to offer a range of specialist services:
