Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Infection, Prevention and Control (IP&C) Team at Bart's Health NHS Trust (BH). This is a newly designed strategic role focused on continuous improvement and the infection prevention and control service delivery and is a hospital based post.

As the Trust Lead Infection Prevention & Control Nurse you will work closely with the Clinical Director for Infection Prevention and Control (CDIPC) and Trust Lead Infection Prevention & Control Doctor and deputise for the Clinical Director of Infection Prevention and Control (CDIPC) in maintaining and developing the quality of infection prevention and control management, through both short and long term strategic planning and development, implementation and evaluation of the organisation - wide service. The post holder will manage and provide a proactive strategic infection prevention and control service ensuring that the Trust continually improves its performance in reducing healthcare-associated infections by developing systems that are evidence-based and grounded in best practice. The post holder will be visible and accessible and innovatively lead the Infection Prevention and Control Team within one of the hospitals.

Main duties of the job

You will need to be able to work autonomously, applying your expert knowledge in infection prevention and control, healthcare associated infection, communicable disease management and health emergency planning. This post is available to clinicians educated to Masters (or equivalent), evidence of infection prevention control qualification and several years of experience working at Band 8B or above. Candidates require significant clinical practice in this specialist field of work within Acute Care. You will need excellent interpersonal, organisational and leadership skills to progress the Infection Prevention and Control agenda and act as a role model in promoting the core principles across the Trust, influencing and improving the quality of care delivered to our patients.

An ability to write Board level reports and high level communication skills with key senior individuals both internally and externally to the Trust is essential.

Job description Job responsibilities

Main duties: The post holder will provide and facilitate the provision of interdisciplinary care for patients using their professional expertise in the Trust. The post holder will contribute to professional development in infection control and prevention (IPC) at a local and national level. They will provide nursing expertise in infection prevention and control for all staff groups, patients and their families.

The post holder will be responsible for providing high level expert advance practice through leadership, consultation, clinical advice, teaching, research and mentorship/support for staff. They will work collaboratively with the health community and other key stakeholders to ensure the successful development and application of knowledge, research, audit and skills across the patient/client pathway to achieve high quality clinical outcomes and reduction in infection rates. Lead programmes to achieve a high level of compliance with the Health Act 2008 (Updated 2015), its Code of Practice and national guidance for infection prevention and control. Ensure that these strategies are interpreted and linked through to the clinical governance and performance framework. Deputise for the DIPC as required, thus providing the Trust Board with assurance of compliance with the Hygiene Code.

Support the CDIPC to ensure the Trust meets its statutory responsibilities in infection prevention and control, by ensuring that there is an appropriately resourced infection prevention team in place, able to support clinical and non-clinical staff in all settings to prevent and control infection in both patients and staff. Lead the mandated IPC reporting on behalf of the CDIPC, including reporting to the Trust board and linking with Workforce Information teams and Business Intelligence Unit. Provide reports to the Group Executive Board, hospital leadership teams as necessary.

Act as a professional advisor to staff within the Trust on all matters relating to Infection Prevention and Control including key contact for all clinical and non-clinical teams that support the delivery of excellent infection prevention and control services, e.g. Employee Well Being Service and Health and Safety.

Contribute to the IPC programme of work on the relevant Trust committees as delegated, e.g. Water and Ventilation Committee, assuring the Trust that said programme meets regulatory and best practice standards.

Lead the provision of infection prevention and control service and support to other organisations as defined by existing and any proposed SLAs.

Full time: 37.5 hours per week and is a hospital based post. You may be required to participate in an emergency or on call cover on an ad hoc basis.
