Job description

Applications are invited for the post of Fixed Term Trust Registrar (ST3+ equivalent) in Trauma and Orthopaedics at The Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust.

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is based across three sites, with the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro being the main DGH, with two further hospitals, St Michael's Hospital in Hayle and West Cornwall Hospital, in Penzance. The trauma service is delivered at the Royal Cornwall Hospital and orthopaedic elective surgery is undertaken at both the Royal Cornwall Hospital and St Michael's Hospital.

The hospital has a 56 bedded Trauma Unit, for both trauma admissions as well as a Trauma Assessment Unit. The Trust runs 18 trauma operating lists per week on the Royal Cornwall Hospital site and a further 15 elective lists at St Michael's Hospital in Hayle per week.

Trauma and Orthopaedics undertakes approximately 5,500 elective operations per year, treats circa 2,700 trauma patients, and sees approximately 13,700 new out-patients and 32,000 follow-up patients.

The unit has a good reputation for supporting its non-training grade doctors and many of our previous trust doctors have gone on to successfully apply for specialty training posts. There is regular departmental teaching and the unit has strong links with the research department and is involved with a number of national multicentre studies with the opportunities for junior doctor involvement.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be required to deliver elective and emergency surgical services, within Cornwall, in close collaboration with Consultant colleagues and within commissioned performance targets.

On Call Availability: Weekday, weekend and night on-calls as part of rota template.

Study and Training: The applicant is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education study leave is provided for this purpose, and the appointee will be entitled to apply to the Trust Study Leave Committee for a contribution to funding of this activity.

Research: Members of the Directorate are encouraged to pursue approved topics of research. There are funds available within the hospital for approved studies. The use of commercial funds for ethically approved trials is encouraged and projects can be supported by the Hospital Audit Department.

The post holder will be part of a 1:12 rota (ST level) providing a 24/7 on-call commitment.

Eligibility
Essential

  • Validated logbook with summary documentation of surgical exposure to date.

Qualifications
Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a Licence to Practice MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Eligible to work at ST3+ levels.
  • 6 - 12 months postgraduate NHS work experience.
  • ILS/ALS or equivalent.
  • MRCS or Equivalent
  • ATLS or Equivalent

Desirable

  • Relevant course such as Fracture Clinic management or advanced surgical courses

Eligibility
Essential

  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation Competences from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.

Desirable

  • Completion of 24 months experience in Trauma and Orthopaedics by the start time of appointment
  • Previous work at Orthopaedic SpR level
