Job summary

Applications are invited for a whole time Clinical Fellow posts (ST7+ level) in Structural Heart Intervention. The posts are available to start in 2025 for a fixed term period of 1 year.

The posts will be based at St Bartholomew's Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. The Structural Heart Intervention Program at the Barts Heart Centre is the largest in the UK, with more than 700 interventions per year, and access to many cutting edge technologies. For the successful candidate this is an exciting opportunity to receive advanced first operator training in all aspects of structural heart intervention including TAVI, mitral and tricuspid intervention, other valvular interventions PFO/ASD and the treatment of complex congenital heart defects. There will be an expectation that the successful candidate makes a significant contribution to the departments research efforts.

The post is ideal for a high caliber trainee with considerable previous experience in interventional cardiology, who now wishes to develop specific skills in structural heart intervention. MRCP or equivalent will be required as is full GMC registration with a license to practice.

Main duties of the job
  1. To work as part of a team to support all the Structural Heart Intervention Program activities including outpatient clinics, ward rounds, invasive procedures and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  2. Subject to competency assessment the successful candidate will receive training in all relevant interventional procedures.
  3. Maintaining the highest quality care and patient safety at all times and assisting in the smooth running of the departments.
  4. Collection of data on all procedures and submission to relevant national databases.
  5. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to audit and research and to actively contribute to the departments research efforts.

Job responsibilities

Interventional Cardiology

Barts Heart Centre is home to the merged cardiac units which were previously based at The London Chest Hospital, St. Bartholomews Hospital and The Heart Hospital. It is the heart attack centre for the region and also provides invasive and interventional cardiology services, structural cardiology, specialist cardiac imaging, electrophysiology services including device implants and ablation therapy for arrhythmia, grown up congenital heart disease, heart muscle disease and heart failure services.

Education and Study Leave

There will be numerous educational opportunities at the Barts Heart Centre including weekly Cardiology teaching and departmental meetings. There will be monthly educational days which include morbidity and mortality meetings, educational sessions, audit, and research presentations.

There is the potential to train to an advanced level in all aspects of structural heart.

Person Specification
Professional Qualifications
  • The applicant must have achieved a primary medical qualification as recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC) and have current Full Registration with the GMC.
  • Substantial previous experience in interventional cardiology.
  • MRCP (or Equivalent).
Clinical Experience & Skills
  • The applicant must be familiar with and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the major principles of the GMC's Good Medical Practice (2006) including: Good clinical care, maintaining good medical practice, teaching and training, appraising and assessing, relationships with patients, and can apply this understanding, working with colleagues, and can apply this understanding, probity and health, current ALS certification.
Research and Audit
  • The applicant should have a demonstrable track record in completing research and audit projects.
  • Higher degree or equivalent.
Communication & IT
  • The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.

  • An understanding of the importance of the patient as the central focus of care.
  • The ability to prioritise tasks and information appropriately.
  • An understanding of the importance of working effectively with others.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with both colleagues and patients.
