The Edinburgh Academy is seeking to appoint an experienced and enthusiastic Trumpet teacher from February 2025 to join our thriving Music department, engaged on a self-employed basis. We anticipate this will be one day of teaching per week.

We welcome applications from well-qualified music graduates with relevant teaching qualifications and/or experience. The successful candidate should be able to teach Trumpet from primary to S6 as well as help develop the Trumpet programme. Teaching may take place in both the Junior and the Senior schools.

Individual lessons are charged at £46.50 per hour. Junior pupils have a 30-minute lesson, and senior pupils have a 40-minute lesson. There may be the opportunity for group coaching, which is charged at £51.50 per hour.

The appointed teacher may be engaged at other times throughout the year where additional rehearsals for performances both in and out of school are required, such as the Edinburgh Competition Festival, St Giles’ at 6, carol services concerts, School Burns’ Suppers, Speakers Dinners, end of year events etc. Such involvement would be remunerated at the hourly rate for that year.

The appointment will be subject to interview and audition, satisfactory references, verification of identity and proof of qualifications.

Main Responsibilities

1. Provide weekly individual Trumpet lessons as directed by the Head of Wind Brass and Percussion.
2. Give regular, informative feedback to students on their progress, and complete an annual written report for parents.
3. Support SQA and other exam candidates as required.
4. Contribute to school and external performances.
5. Maintain positive relationships with pupils, parents and colleagues.
6. Follow the guidelines and expectations of the Music Department.

2. Has proven success in teaching young people.
3. Has thorough knowledge of repertoire, including that required for ABRSM/TCL exams.
4. Is a prompt and effective communicator, in person and by email.
5. Has excellent organisational skills.

About the School/Organisation

The Edinburgh Academy is a fully co-educational school. The School consists of a Senior School, Junior School and a Nursery Department. The School is a member of HMC. The Edinburgh Academy moved to full co-education across the whole school in 2008. The Junior and Senior Schools are on separate sites, both of which have spacious grounds and sports facilities including extensive playing fields, an all-weather sports area, and a large Sports Hall and Centre.
