The Water Well Project is a well-established not-for-profit organisation, currently based in Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. Our mission is to promote good health and wellbeing to communities from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds to improve their health literacy. Our vision is that all communities from migrant, refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds achieve equitable access to healthcare.

The Water Well Project seeks to fill a Treasurer vacancy on the board of directors. We particularly welcome applicants with sound professional skills and demonstrated knowledge and experience in accounting/finance, and/or in fundraising or philanthropy. This volunteer position is instrumental in setting the strategic direction of the organisation.

The Treasurer will support the organisation’s vision and mission, ensure effective governance, oversee financial compliance, and engage with stakeholders as needed. This includes managing the organisation's governance framework, monitoring its financial affairs to ensure compliance with all financial accountabilities, and meeting with current and potential stakeholders to foster strong relationships and support.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management

1. Advise the Board on financial matters, including reporting and disclosure.
2. Promote high standards of ethical and corporate behaviour.
3. Ensure the board meets its financial obligations and implement sound financial practices.
4. Identify and communicate financial risks.
5. Support the CEO with financial reports and budget preparation.
6. Oversee financial reporting obligations (e.g., ATO, ACNC).
7. Liaise with the CEO and bookkeeping/auditing firm regarding payroll and obligations.
8. Oversee the financial acquittal of large grants.
9. Provide bookkeeping and accounting support where required.

Governance and Compliance

1. Ensure the effective operation of the Board and timely implementation of decisions.
2. Liaise with regulators and ensure timely completion of reports.

Stakeholder Engagement

1. Assist with communications to stakeholders.
2. Work collaboratively with the finance committee, board chair, and CEO.
3. Attend Finance Committee Meetings (approximately six annually, weekday evenings).

Competencies and Skills

1. CPA qualification is required.
2. Experience in the not-for-profit sector is required.
3. Experience with Xero or similar accounting software is essential.
4. Knowledge of a director’s responsibilities, including governance, ethical, fiduciary, and financial aspects of operating a not-for-profit charity, and compliance with obligations under ACNC.
5. Strategic expertise and ability to contribute to decision-making.
6. Strong understanding of financial reporting requirements.
7. Experience in financial compliance and fundraising is highly regarded.
8. Excellent ethical standards, communication skills, and attention to detail.
9. Strong organisational, prioritisation, and time management skills.
10. Knowledge of the Australian healthcare system and/or refugee sector is advantageous.
11. Previous board or senior management experience is desirable.

Term of Office and Time Commitment

3 years, subject to satisfactory performance and ratification at the next AGM. Approximately 8-10 hours per month. Attend all Board meetings (about 9 per year), the AGM, and Finance Committee Meetings.
